I swear to god, I used to be able to DE other people's gear, they'd stick in in the little box in trade window, I'd click disenchant, and boom, win-win situation, I get some gold, they get crap to AH.

Haha, okay -- it is and if these forums have taught me one thing, it's that I'm a terrible person. :D

Anyway to the OP, no it's never been possible to do what you're saying, nor are there plans to make such changes currently. I have a feeling, what you're remembering is having people trade you what they wanted DE'd, and you disenchanted it while it was in your inventory.
