I am working on getting my Protection warrior to 70 and looking forward to raiding with him.
I sacrificed my ability to PVP and grind fast to be able to tank. This was a choice that I made, often drawing ridicule like, "Protection Spec, nice way to gimp yourself, LOL"!
I paid the price, so I can perfect my tanking skills and do well as a tank.
Now Blizz is introducing the DK's who will be uber cool, Plate wearing, TANKS! I bet they won't be gimped in PVP or leveling!
Blizz needs to enable Protection specced warriors to PVP and Grind efficiently or expect them to become obsolete.

Currently I don't think any class has a talent spec that is completely obsolete, so I'd have to say "no".

So say when Death Knights come out, what will stop people from playing an enhancement shaman or retribution paladin over playing a death knight? ( I realize the obvious "We still feel people won't give up on their current motto" ) but I'm sure many there's quite a number of people probably wanting to re-roll their hybrid for a DK.

Nothing will be "stopping" them. We prefer to have class options open to the players who want to try and and not limiting them to a great degree, especially for a brand new class that is as exciting as the Death Knight.

While we hope a lot of people decide to try out this new class, not everybody will do it at the start as it will take longer to reach Northrend compared to a character that is already level 70. And like you mentioned, not every player will want to forsake the spirits or the light and travel a darker road.
