What is the intent of the affliction tree?

Please note this is for PVE only.

As I continue leveling my lock in the beta, and do testing to gain data and formulate opinions on the warlock class trees and skills, it would be helpful if I could know what blizzard's true intent is for the affliction tree.

As it stands, it would SEEM that the tree is meant for pretty much leveling and maybe introductory raiding at best. While it's nice to have a "leveling" tree, I would be happier, personally, with the affliction tree bieng THE raiding tree. The affliction tree has many things that make it great for leveling, with really 2 key aspects. Dark Pact, and drain life. These 2 abilities are key to affliction being great for leveling, as they give you the ability to just keep going and pull multiple mobs, etc.

I don't know if that is the intent of the affliction build, but personally, I, and many other warlocks, would probably rather see it be the premier raiding build. The affliction tree is what I feel defines warlocks. it's the dots, debuffs, etc, tree. But as it stands, you get to use it for leveling and that's pretty much it. I wouldn't even mind taking a nerf to drain life, and even removing dark pact and putting it in the demonology tree, if in place, affliction was given something to help with the scaling issues in PVE end game raiding, thus making the tree once again THE premier PVE spec.

So, is the intent of the tree relegated to leveling duty in blizzard's eyes?

Affliction and Demonology Warlocks should be able to compete on DPS meters for raids, while Affliction may be the best "leveling spec," it isn't intended to be limited to such.

Q u o t e:

Thank you very much for your reply. Im wondering if you can answer about the single biggest problem plaguing warlocks atm. Do the devs have any interest at looking into making dots have some sort of scaling with Haste and or Crit?

EDIT: Are you the designer who was there on the floor after the panel on loot, the one who mentioned that he had worked on warlocks for BC?

We do forsee Affliction Warlocks in raid PvE using Shadow Bolt and Haunt, which are both cast time and capable of critting (so haste and crit do help those). In terms of actual DoTs critting, we currently don't have any intention of doing that. We did make haste lower your GCD, which can help if you want to chain cast DoTs.

Bane should also be working with Haunt (reducing it from 2.0->1.5), not sure if that was in the talent update or not. Previously we had Haunt at a base 1.5, but this allows us to give it a higher coefficient.

What do you guys think?
