Warcrafts content writers..

This might not be the right place to ask this, if it's not then I'm sorry. :(

I was wondering if content for Warcraft -- Quest text, NPC dialog, and other 'flavor text' throughout the game -- was written by programmers or some other department, or if there is a 'job' that is purely developing content and writing for the world in a creative rather then a technical sense.

Thanks :)

We do have a department dedicated to the less technical aspects of design, and lore in particular. An important part of our Development Staff is the Creative Development department; they are responsible for the conception and furthering of the lore associated with all of Blizzard's intellectual properties.

That said, the actual in-game dialogue, quest text and other bits of flavor are often written by the Designers themselves, but they work closely with Creative Development to ensure that the work is lore-accurate.

English major AND you like Sabriel?

Fairly certain those two easily go hand-in-hand. ;)

While these aren't my usual stomping grounds...

Both the Creative Development team and our own Design Team come from all walks of life. There are those who studied Creative Writing amongst us, most certainly. I myself, despite being in design, went to college for a Fine Arts degree.

Creative Development is an excellent group who know their lore and keep us designers from going off-track, but a significant amount of the content you see in-game is a collaboration between the two teams, with the designers writing up the meat of it.

Whether on the Design Team or in Creative Development, everyone involved has a passion for the lore, and we endeavor to show that in the content we bring to you. :)

A better explanation than I provided, I'd say.
