Unpredictable, spontaneous freezing

I have noticed an issue with my computer that sometimes when I am playing WoW, my entire computer will seem to just... spontaneously freeze and I must cut the power for it to recover. I cannot provide many details on this, as it seems to happen in completely non-situational moments in that it has happened in different environments completely unrelated to eachother while doings different things that have nothing in common, be it in Terokkar flying around and generally idling or in Karazhan running around fighting almost constantly. There seems to be no pattern to this and the issue comes and goes. Sometimes I won't freeze for a week, other times I'll freeze twice in a half hour. It is completely unpredictable and sporadic.

Another thing I should note is that this has happened while playing on both maximum and minimum settings. I cannot comprehend what could possibly be causing my entire computer to freeze and not just WoW. When this happens, I am unable to move my mouse or access Task Manager or any such natural things when there is an issue with a program.

Greetings Krei,

Game freezes can be due to a few different things. Please try the steps below, one at a time. Each one has the potential of solving your issue, so please try the game again after each step.

Be sure you have the latest video, sound, network card and motherboard drivers. More information on identifying your video and sound driver versions can be found at:

Be sure you have all the available updates from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

A program running on your machine could be causing issues. Please try closing all background applications as explained on our support site: http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=agi0558p

Check your hard disk for errors by following the instructions on our ScanDisk/Defrag page: http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=mgi0559p

If you overclock your hardware in any way, even if other applications on your computer are stable, it may cause problems with the game. Please set all your components to their factory default speeds while playing.

If your system is becoming too hot, it may cause the game to freeze or crash. You can test this by removing the side of your case from the computer and aiming a larger fan such as a desk fan into the opening. If the issue goes away or prolongs it, then we suggest making sure there isn't a lot of dust in your computer case and adding a fan to your system to help distribute heat.

The latest drivers should be the following:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html

For the temperature there is software that can monitor the motherboards sensors, however there have been times when even this has not been accurate. As an easy test you can take the side cover off your system and aim a larger fan into the opening. If the game freezes stop then you will know that there was an overheating issue. You can also check that all the fans in the system are running properly and that the vents are not clogged with dust.

Some motherboards will list what they are when they start, but if the motherboard make and model is not being listed then you will have to find out some other way. If you still have the documentation that came with the system such as the user manual this should have the type of motherboard that you have.

Failing that you can take the side of the case off and view what is written on the motherboard itself. As far as I know all motherboards have their identification written on them somewhere but it can be different for each board. if the system was custom built you may be able to ask the person that built it what it was.
