Thinkpad T40 - Mobility Radeon 9000 Issues

Maikolator

Hi all,

After installing the new patch 2.0 i am having the same problems as most of the people describe in the forums using the mobility radeons.

The game used to run fine without any problems, however after updating it will lock up after 2-3 minutes of gameplay. If i manage to alt-tab or alt-f4 i can save the computer from crashing. Sometimes i get the error that "VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator or it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands"
Other times the computer just locks up completely.

Considering that it was working fine before the update and hat so many people are getting it then we must conclude that there is a bug somewhere in the game engine.

My laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T40 with Mobility Radeon 9000 32MB graphics.

I have tried the official Catalyst drivers with DHModTool, the Omega drivers and also the original IBM drivers as well as the drivers. All produce the same reproductable problem. It is not a matter of overheat or chip damage since it has been working fine for a long time.
I have tried all the suggestions i could find in the forums but still experiencing the same problem.

I have deleted WTF,WDB and started fresh but the problem persists.
I have tried both DirectX and OpenGL modes.
Short of a reinstallation of the game what else can i try?
I still cannot believe that a single patch update has caused all of these problems. Software updates are supposed to be backwards compatible.

Q u o t e:
I was having trouble on a Compaq running with this chipset- I found the advice in this forum
http://www.driverheaven.net/mobility-radeon-drivers-support/124985-need-updated-driver-ati-mobility-radeon-9000-a.html
solved the problem. About halfway down the page is a post with 2 links.

You have to pay attention though- download the ATI console first (second link in post), then it will try to install but stop with an error message.
Then go to the driverheaven link (first link in the same post) and download & run that utility- it will allow the ATI console to continue installation, and, for me, anyway, solved the issue.
In addition to that, note that the latest Catalyst driver will not support desktop cards before the 9550. You will need Catalyst 6.5 and the DHMOD tool for the drivers to work with a Radeon 9000.
