The death of raiding
by Zylos | 09/05/2008 12:50:45![]() "At this point, Kaplan revealed the massive news that Blizzard are changing the way raids are done in Northrend, and making them similar to the 5 man instances, whereby they can be played on two levels of difficulty. All 25 man raids will also be available as 10 man raids. " http://www.worldofwar.net/articles/413336/wotlk-report-may-2008/page4 bottom of page as if blizzad hasn't slapped raiders in the face enough, here it comes, taking away the last thing that made large scale raiding appealing at all. it hurt when they stopped making 40 mans. it hurt even more when they gave everyone the free epics (same graphics at that). But raiding still had one thing left going for it: the thrill of killing the toughest bosses, and the biggest figure-head's in WoW lore, and being one of the minority who can do it, (even if they do only take 25 people now). seems that blizzard wants to destroy that one last thing. so what now blizzard? is Arthas going to be a 10 man? probably the baddest mutha you have ever had to offer us in terms of lore and power, is reduced to this? SURE you can do them as part of the 25 man. but why? loot?! HA! you ruined that with pvp and badge rewards. what good is raiding loot except for just that. raiding. if i want it too look bad ass then i will go pvp. and get my gear that is just as good, looks just as good, and can be used for an activity that i can do whenever i want, wherever i want, and not need to be a scheduld thing that at the moment i love doing, and wish i could do it whenever i wanted, with 24 other people. and then when i feel like seeing this content i can get my small little guild and go cruise through the 10 man. side note- you want to know WHY kara is the most played raid instance you have? Because it gives more freaking badges(badges=free epics for everyone fyi) than any other instance in the game for about 10% of the time and effort. edit: just to clear a few things up i have no problem with 10 mans infact i think they are great. what i do have a problem with is a 25 man instance being available for play as also a 10 man instance. essentially taking all the appeal out of ever doing the 25 man. basically: why be "hardcore" when you can be "casual" and get the same exact experience? i understand that th majority of money comes from casual players. and that is fine, but making a change like this will essentially drive off more dedicated players for only a small increase in the casual player base. it also shows somewhat of a downwad spiral that will eventually root out all large scale raids altogether. I believe it was discussed in some of the interviews how itemization should be improved in Wrath of the Lich King. While we don't have a bullet list of details, we are aware of players' concerns on this topic and we plan to address them to some degree. We'll have more information on this in the near future.
But they won't be the exact same experience as one will require a lot more coordination than the other, so... ?
I am not sure where you got this idea, is there a quote you can reference in one of the interviews? What is the rainbow? |

I think we talk about this in a future BlizzCast, we're working on getting it out to you soon!
The items are an important concern. I can't share any details right now, but as I said before, we are aware of this. I know some guilds are able to do some early bosses in Hyjal and Black Temple without killing Lady Vashj and/or Prince Kael'that thanks to the badge rewards, but as a strong raiding guild, does that really affect you while you are smashing Illidan and working on Sunwell Plateau? In my personal experience a lot of those guilds simply do NOT have the coordination to handle complex fights and run into brick walls in attempting to push content like this. As far as the raid dungeons in Wrath of the Lich King with both 10 person and 25 person versions, the players clearing the 25 person versions will still have the better gear and stand out, and honestly, if they see someone has killed the 10 person version only, I doubt it will make a big impact on them as they likely clear both.
Glad to help. Just keep in mind this is all new information that came out today but it is not to be a completely comprehensive breakdown of everything. Things are still being worked on and we will keep discussing everything when it's ready. What is the rainbow? |
