Tanking at 70 without being Prot.

Can it be done?

I just hit 70 recently and I currently have a pure PvP build of 41/20/0. I've tanked for the upper level TBC instances before, sometimes I have problems if the group thinks I'm a druid/pally and just nukes things before I can sunder or if we just don't have enough CC but other then that, I've been able to at least complete runs.

So I havent tanked through any of the 70 instances yet. I got asked to join a CoT run but then was kicked out when they asked me if I was Prot. and I told them no...which hurt my feelings and worries me quite a bit. I want to gear up so I can PvP better, but on the otherside I'm afraid of embarassing myself if I can't tank without being in Prot. I have a decent set of tanking gear that I slap on when I need to also...

Anyway so...has any non-prot. warriors been able to tank level 70 instances without too much trouble?

Remember, remember, the 5th of December,
The patch day treason and plot.
I see no reason, for MS and Cleavin',
Since Tseric wants us to spec Prot

What the devs want to work towards is having a generally arms spec'ed warrior as something of a base-line tank. If you don't take that too literally, I will elaborate. :P

Figure Prot to be high tanking and Fury to be high DPS. Put varying Arms spec's in a middle-ground. That's a general way to look at things.

Q u o t e:

where do druids and paladins with varying specs rank up compared to the three types of warriors? It's not looking so great right now.

edit: to clarify, i'm talking about differing specs along with differing gear sets. I don't expect a holy paladin to tank in holy gear, but looking at it right now, certain skills such as consecration (baseline) and (swipe) go above and beyond what a warrior has, even as prot spec'd.

Sorry. I thought you were a druid at first.

Hold on...

Ok, to clarify after my delete...

The 'more-hybrid' classes are spec'cing into completely different things. They won't be tanking if they don't focus it, as you said. They may be able to protect the caster group in some fashion, but it'll be in the form of multi-threat aggro generation and then healing the party. Off-tanking, support healing, dpsing in the case of cat druids or ret pallys.

The difference is that single target aggro will need to be maintained in situations, while multi-target aggro is to clean up poor aggro management, whether it be on the part of the nukers, the healers or the sloppy main tanks.

I have a question: what can I do to convince you that the arms warrior as a base-line tank is not working right now?

You don't have to 'convince' me, it's something the devs are working general ideas around. Yes, right now doesn't seem right. Small moves.
