I blame Bill Gates.

Still at handshaking :(

He isn't there anymore. Didn't you hear? Mosquitoes are in your base :)

Are you all logging on using a Battle.net account or a World of Warcraft account, or both?

Players have been able to resolve the issue by merging their Wow account to a Battle.net account.
https://us.battle.net/account/creation/landing.xml

Please try that if you haven't already.

Hasn't BNet had A LOT of issues with hackers and such in the past? I am just a little hesitant to create a BNet account knowing that....

Oh....I'm also using a Macbook Pro...stuck in handshaking and all that good stuff :-)

Battle.net accounts on USWest, USEast, Europe and Asia isn't the same thing as this Battle.net account. It's more of a Blizzard Store account rather than the accounts mentioned previously. We're looking into why the normal WoW accounts aren't able to log on.

Good! Glad to hear it's being looked into.

Would someone mind elaborating on the differences in the Battle.net accounts? I found that explanation confusing.

Everything that you wanted to know about the new Battle.net account can be found at http://www.blizzard.com/account
There's a Learn More link there.

Basically it's your Blizzard Store account. You can toss in your old game CD-Keys (except Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition) and it saves your stuff there. It can also save your World of Warcraft accounts. Once you sign up for it, you'll have to use that system to log into the game.

Q u o t e:
Bleh, stuck on handshaking as well, imac. is there any way to fix this BESIDES setting up a battle.net accnt? I have my account, the 2nd account for my daughter, and a 3rd WoW accnt that my husband has all using this machine, so setting up 3 battle.net accounts is rather irritating.

Plus I dislike the fact that anyone having me email address will half of my log in information.

Battle.net accounts are flexible in that one Battle.net account can hold up to 8 (I think) World of Warcraft accounts. If you don't want to sign up for one, you don't have to but it means you can't get in at this time. We're still investigating why normal accounts can't get thru on the Mac.

imac...stuck at handshake... 5:25 pm (AST)

any eta on when this is going to be fixed...cause I'm not creating a battlenet account and will cancel my subscrption if I have to.

There is no ETA at this time. If you wish to cancel your subscription, Account Management should still be up. It won't help us get to the root of the problem any faster so these types of threats are uncalled for.

Q u o t e:

Before I finalize merge, which I really don't want to btw, what would happen after logging in if all 3 are on the same battle.net? After logging into wow would if show all 3 accounts and you would be able to choose one, and if thats the case, would I be able to have 2 instances of wow open at the same time? [daughter is a minor, and I tend to help her out through instances on the same machine as we only have 1 comp]

Also, any possible eta on a fix? like hours/days/weeks? Don't need specifics, but if its gonna be days I guess I have to do this to not miss raids >>

If you have multiple people on one Battle.net account, you log onto the game using the Battle.net account (email address + password + optional Authenticator). A list of accounts will pop up. You can pick the one you want to get on. Multiple people can log onto one Battle.net account but only one person can be on the World of Warcraft account.

I don't have a Battle.net account and really don't want to make one. Am I now supposed to make one of these, then somehow merge accounts? I'd like to just be able to log in. Is that going to be possible?

Q u o t e:
on the mac technical page blue's less than polite response was "well, this is going to be mandatory soon anyway so you might as well create your battle.net account now if you want to play".

I refuse to create a battle.net account under these circumstances. I may just cancel my subscription over this issue.

Another classic example of Blizz's arrogance.

The main issue is that the login server isn't correctly working. You have a few choices so far:

1. Log onto a PC
2. Wait until we fix it
3. Make a Battle.net account, which bypasses the login server with a different login server
4. (your other option that you posted) Cancel your subscription.

We're on #2 but the other choices are available to you.

This type of account is not required at this time and will remain so until further notice.

Q u o t e:
well, if i merge now, can you guys at least make it possible to reverse that action? I really dont want to be forced to merge.

Our department does not deal with either the World of Warcraft account or the Battle.net account. You may want to call the Billing department to see if such a thing is possible. http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20606

If you play older Blizzard titles or might like to make usage of the Blizzard Online Store, I don't see why you would want to revert the merge. It's a centralized area that lets you store stuff, order stuff and add stuff.

Q u o t e:
If I have two accounts I use for playing, can I merge them both into one battle.net account?

Will this make it unable for me to log in between the two?

You can merge up to 8 (I think) into one Battle.net account. You can still log on as the following:

someemail@someplace.com -> Account 1
someemail@someplace.com -> Account 2

You can't do:

someemail@someplace.com -> Account 1
someemail@someplace.com -> Account 1

Same as the old ruleset except now you have a "main" account name and password.

Q u o t e:

One day it works, the next day it doesn't.

Also using a Mac running 10.5.6 and stuck, of course at hand shaking.

If I wanted to log in using battle.net, I would go play WC3.

Centralized = One hacker gets all your accounts = Blizzard is going Commy

You're on a Mac so you have the security advantage over Windows folks, so *less* of a keylogger problem there. Other than that, I've posted several times that we're looking at the main cause of this. You can always use your normal account on either a PC or BootCamp into Windows as an alternative to everything else stated here.

Q u o t e:
what does a battle.net account possibly have to do with the fact that some how all the people with mac computers are stuck at the handshaking screen?
if i am paying for a service i expect it to work please fix the problem

While I understand that you pay for the service, unexpected outages will happen from time to time. We try our best to minimalize this. I have already explained that there are two login systems for World of Warcraft right now... it just happens that the old system isn't working correctly for Mac people.

Q u o t e:
I merged my account as advised by blue posts, and still cannot log in to the game.

The login screen does not advance beyond the "Connecting" phase using my Battle.net account name.

Please advise.

If you were to log onto your normal World of Warcraft account, does it complain and tell you to log on using the Battle.net account? Some systems will need a power cycle before they can connect properly.

Let me aware you a prize since April 1, 2009 is approaching: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/items/tinfoilhat.xml

I can assure you this situation was unintentional. Some players found a workaround by merging into the new Bnet accounts, so we have been using it as a suggestion for those looking for a temporary workaround.

This issue seems to be resolved, many players that have not converted their accounts have commented they can login fine again.

I don't see how someone having your email address will mean that they will brute force you. I'm sure a lot of people out there know of my .support email address, which I've also use for various Battle.net accounts. Those were never broken into.

Both the Battle.net system and World of Warcraft login systems deter permit brute-force hacking since there's a nice time delay when you fail too many times. I believe most email providers do the same type of work.

If you're pulling Sarah Palin, most of the things people used to access her account were found thru search engine queries. That type of system and isn't applicable to most folks unless they were really laxed about their security. This issue is outside of the scope of this department. If you'd like to see a different type of login system, you can go to the Suggestion forum and pitch in an idea.

The Technical Support department does not design or implement these systems. They're handled by different sets of developers. In this case, it's the Battle.net team. The only way to get to them is to use the Suggestions forum - http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.html?sid=1&forumId=11122

The current system is what is in place right now. We can assist you in using that, add games, add a World of Warcraft account and so forth. Anything else we do not have control over.
