Mystery Problem

I am having trouble installing/updating WOW. I am currently on a first gen MacBook Pro. I have ran wow and other games before with absolutely no problems. One day, wow started failing updates. I had to put in my install disc and repair then disk, then try the update for it to work. Then, I got to the point where even that wouldn't work. The game would never update, it would always say some random file name could not be opened. So, I figured I would try some erasing stuff. I reinstalled the game, nothing. I did an archive and install, nothing. I did an erase and install, nothing, i zeroed out the disc and reinstalled an os from scratch, nothing. So then I bought a new HDD. Put it in, everything runs fine. Try to run the game...nothing. I didnt even restore my backup, i installed the game from a brand new OS on a brand new HDD and i still get the problem. I tried to do the starcraft 2 beta just to see if it was just wow or what. the starcraft 2 beta will update all the way but when i go to play it gives me an error report. so i dont know what else to do. i think im gonna put boot camp on my comp and try running it from there. but if anyone could help me with what the problem might be, and it works, i will send you a gift card lol. i feel like i have tried everything. any help is soooo much appreciated. ill be happy to provide specs and reports as needed. thanks

That type of mystery problem tends to point towards bad RAM or an overheating part. More likely the bad RAM. As for StarCraft II, we don't know unless you post system specs. I'm going to move you over to the Mac forum where you can get better help.

I'm with Dath on this one, Predjudas. I would recommend running the Apple Hardware Test. You will need to have the original disc your computer was shipped with in the drive. Hold down "D" while you're booting. This is particular to Intel Macs. If you have a PPC Mac (G4 or G5), you'll hold down "Option" while booting to get into the Startup Manager where you can choose the Apple Hardware Test from the choices.

I'd recommend an extended test of all hardware, looping if that's possible. That will let us know for sure if there are any hardware problems. If it reports any hardware issues, you'll want to contact a local Apple Service Provider to address those.

Hrmm...Okay...Did you get an AppleCare Protection plan with your system? If you did, it came with a disc that has TechTool Deluxe on it. It may be time to try to run that. Otherwise, we may have to take a trip to the nearest Apple service provider.
