Midsummer Fire Festival Testing

The World Event Team has activated the revamped Midsummer Fire Festival on the PTR. The primary focus of the PTR testing is still on the content of the Isle of Quel'Danas, but if you could spare some testing time to review the holiday, we'd greatly appreciate it!

You can visit any capital city -- including Shattrath -- to begin most quests involving the holiday.

Some focus points for feedback:

  • The boss fight (similar to the Headless Horseman) located in the Slave Pens of Coilfang Reservoir;
  • The Torch Tossing and Torch Catching quests located in the capitals;
  • The lead-in quests offered by the Earthen Ring elders and the daily summon quests that result;
  • The various camps in the wilderness and the buffs that result from activities there (honoring the flame, dancing around the ribbon pole with multiple people).

We'll also gladly take any other feedback you may have regarding the holiday.

Here are the known issues that have been fixed on our end and should be fixed soon on the PTR:

  • The Glacial Lieutenants from the Ice Stones in Silithus are not able to be attacked.
  • More Torch Tossing and More Torch Catching are unable to be completed for Horde players.
  • The Flame Keepers and Flame Wardens are hostile; this will be changed.

Your friendly neighborhood World Designer.
"Mind if I drive?"
"Not if you don't mind me clawing at the dash and shrieking like a cheerleader."

Q u o t e:

Are there any other ways to get fire blossoms other than the two dailies(Torch throwing and Torch tossing.)

Yes.

The quest offered by the Earthen Ring Elder, while it initially leads to Ashenvale, eventually leads to a level-appropriate summoning daily quest that will yield blossoms.

The fire proc should also work for casters; please, by all means, test it and let us know. The buff itself is tied to the fire in the wilderness of that area, which the opposite faction can stamp out (and you can relight).

Flame Keepers and Flame Wardens are only outside the capitals, I believe.

Thank you for the rest of your feedback. :)

Q u o t e:
I've been unable to find the previous years Mid-Summer quests, "The Festival of Fire (Alliance)(Horde), Flickering Flames in the Eastern Kingdoms, Wild Fires in the Eastern Kingdoms, Flickering Flames in Kalimdor, Wild Fires in Kalimdor, and A Light in Dark Places." Are they just not implemented on the ptr or what? If not, they should be, as they all give 10 Burning Blossoms each, which would aid in the testing of the new goodies :)

These quests are no longer a part of the Midsummer Fire Festival; it's been revamped.

Q u o t e:

Boo :(

So besides the initial "Talk to X Npc for X reward" the only real dailies are the Torch throwing/catching? Thats a bummer :( its like Brewfest all over again. Doing the same 2 quests everyday until you finally get enough tokens.

Edit: On a different note, I'm glade I got my little whispy pet last year heh.

...as I said earlier, no, those are not the only real dailies. If you do the Earthen Ring Elder's Ashenvale quests, it will open up another daily quest to kill a summoned lieutenant.

There are also other ways to get burning blossoms dealing with the fires in the wilderness. Honor the flames of your friends... and stomp out the flames of your enemies. ;)

EDIT: ...no, the Horde mount we hinted at for Brewfest is not in the Midsummer Fire Festival. :P

Q u o t e:
Of course, was just saying it'll take just as long to get the neat goodies as it did that mount :P

Was talking to Grimbold on that last bit; apologies. ;)

Q u o t e:

Will it still be possible to get some of the rewards that were from those quests? Like the red wisp pet (I really want this thing, I almost completed a light in dark places last year, but couldn't before the end of the festival, and have been waiting all year for it to start again), and the fire festival shoulders? And can you still do the quests from stealing the opposite faction's flames to get the helm?

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions.

The old rewards, for the most part, are not available at this time. That isn't to say we aren't listening.

Q u o t e:
Can we still take fires from enemy capitals?

If so, is the reward the same and does it also involve the new city for either faction associated with TBC?

Yes, it's in.

Yes, the reward is still the same.

Yes, it requires the new city. ;)

Q u o t e:
I am either blind or there is no wilderness bonfire at the following locations: (will edit/update as I find out)

-Searing Gorge: Used to be at the base of the stairs to Brm, but nowhere to be found in the entire zone.

Generally speaking, If you have an Alliance, Horde, or Steamwheedle settlement in the area, that's where you'll find a fire. ;) There may be an exception or two.

Some things were indeed shifted around, as befits a revamping of the holiday.

Q u o t e:

While we're on the topic of Holiday revamps, can we get a hint as to what else has been revamped =O

Let's keep this focused on Midsummer, shall we? :P

Thanks for such quick responses!

I took a good look around the place and I couldn't find it, if someone does please let me know lol.

Searing Gorge doesn't have an Alliance, Horde, or Steamwheedle settlement; therefore... ;)

The stealing the other capitals' flames quest is still in with the same reward (the crown). Blossoms are gotten elsewhere, and I'm pretty sure that's where we're keeping it; the blossom amounts have been calculated the way they are for a reason.

Kiisa, the issue with the stones should be resolved next push, allowing you to summon them in a bit more quickly. :)

And yes, Piestuffing, we're testing it now so we don't have to test it later. We tend to work pretty far in advance with holidays.

Thank you all for your continued feedback; we're still reading.

EDIT: Also, regarding the shoulders and the wisp pet, we're in discussions about adding them to the vendor for blossom prices, though if this happens, you may have to make a choice between getting the old rewards and the new (or a mixture of both).

Q u o t e:
As I started running around various azeroth zones for fires, I noticed when I went to winterspring that the alliance flame is next to the horde flight point & the horde fire is next to the alliance fp. This seems to be inconsistent with areas like tanaris when horde is next to horde & vice versa.

Just struck me as kinda weird.

Good catch, thanks.

Hey all. We're still reading the midsummer feedback. Thanks for your continued input.

First, if you've noticed, you can now purchase most of the old, discontinued quest rewards for blossoms. We've also hooked it up so that characters who had the quest "A Light in Dark Places" (completed, mind you) in their quest log that were waiting to turn it in can do so.

I don't believe we'll be removing the XP from the quests. If anything, many of the buffs and the like from this event further support the gaining of experience. If you wish to remain static at one level, that is your choice, but it is not a choice we necessarily support, and as a result you may miss out on rewards from quests.

And just because we're testing midsummer content, it doesn't mean the patch is releasing in the summer. ;) Event content like this is always patched in early and then lies latent until the time is right.

Q u o t e:
Feedback on the Brazier of Dancing Flames: this is one of the neatest holiday vanity items I've seen to date. However, the recent nerf to its size was a bit of a dissapointment :( is there a chance that the change will be reverted?

The "old" Brazier:

And the "new" Brazier:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h314/kaikulu/braziersmall.jpg

The small size is actually her intended size. The large firedancer was a result of the scaling issues you saw recently where non-combat pets were gargantuan.

So nope, she's staying that size. But you might try dancing with her at some point... ;)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. We're going to have some focused testing on Ahune very soon, here, so get ready to hang out in Slave Pens.

Q u o t e:

I was supposed to keep it in my quest log for a whole year? :(

I abandoned it because I needed more space in my quest log, and when the festival came back, I was going to re-do it. Should we keep all complete-but-not-yet-turned-in seasonal quests in our logs?

No.

I'm going to put this out here right now -- if you don't manage to finish a holiday quest by the time the holiday ends, it's likely best to abandon it, but understand that the possibility exists it might not be offered again the next year.

Now, in the case of Midsummer, we've added a few of the old rewards to the vendor for blossom cost, but that may not always be the case. Additionally, I changed the turn-in NPC for those who have had it completed in their log all this time as a courtesy, but again, this may not always be available.

We're not trying to phase out all old content from year to year or anything so drastic, but there may well be discontinued quest rewards every now and again as we add new content and move forward.

Just be mindful of it. :)

Q u o t e:
I noticed the quest, Unusual Activity, in Ashenvale for the Midsummer Fire Festival is currently disabled or bugged. The quest said to go south of the Blackfathom Deeps entrance along the coast near some ruins, and there are no cultists whatsoever on any island. I have made a bug report in the PTR, which was submitted.

Also, I have no MODS running on the PTR.

Now, when did it say to go to an island, eh? ;)

First, did you check to see if Midsummer was running on the PTR? It's been up and down. If Midsummer isn't active, the cultists won't show up, and this isn't really a bug.

Please don't get rid of the item [Captured Flame], I've been playing the game for a long time and this pet is both unique and cool! Getting rid of it completely would be sad. At least replace it with something similar or leave it as a reward for a different quest, or as a drop somewhere or something!!! This pet is too cool to get rid of completely so I am asking you with much passion, PLEASE don't get rid of this item completely. Thanks for your time and consideration.

I do believe, my friend, that you need to catch up with the thread. ;)

Q u o t e:

I feel I must add my 2 cents in here, even though it is tantamount to urinating on a forest fire (ie. ineffective).
I have noticed a definite trend with respect to annual events. Those of us who didn't start playing WoW from release are getting a nice groin kick on a regular basis. It appears that all of the 'flair' items - things that just look neat or do cute things - are routinely becoming unavailable to everyone who didn't get them the 1st time around. While I can appreciate having some items in this category, there should be a limit. Major events, like expansions and collector editions, deserve unique rewards that are never again available. However, when an event is a yearly thing, I cannot understand why you would want to dangle the carrot in front of our faces this way. I have been reading up on all of the non-combat pets and other rewards that are only available once per year. My hopes get raised, imagining the time when I will finally be able to get one of these items, only to have my hopes dashed against the rocks because the quests are being removed this year. (as a side note, I have all of the possible rewards from Brewfest, including the mount, all of the rares from "Love is in the Air", and all of the non-combat pets from the Feast of Winter Veil. Obviously, I put great effort into getting the most enjoyment I can from these annual events.)

I completely understand the desire to 'revamp' or improve upon existing content. However, rather than removing the 'old' content, why not include it with the new changes? This way, people who were not around in previous years to enjoy these events can still experience what others have. Why penalize us for not having played before now?

Edit: Yes, I realize the [Captured Flame] is still available via purchase using the blossoms, but my concern is with the quest lines that were removed. I'm quite certain I'll grind out the required number of blossoms and get my coveted pet. That wasn't my primary reason for posting.

My friend, I personally was responsible for many of the quests in the old Midsummer. I'll tell you straight up why the vast majority of the quests then were phased out. First, some relied on level 60 being the cap, which is no longer the case. We could have shifted the fires to 70 areas, but to be honest, the quests at the end of the day just weren't that fun. We're striving to improve the events, and that means sometimes things will end up on the cutting room floor. To be honest, you're not missing much regarding the quests that were removed. ;)

The main mechanics of the event are still present and have been improved upon. There are new quests that involve more entertaining mechanics, and the exploration aspect contained within the old quests as well are still present with the honoring and stamping out of the flames all around the world.

The reasons behind such phasing out tends to be primarily that the old content is incongruous with the new. The old quests wouldn't have fit with the new ones in Midsummer and weren't really on par with what we sought to do this year.

Aside from the initial design of Midsummer which has since been rectified, could you give me examples of this "trend" you claim exists regarding many flair items being phased out? I haven't seen a great amount of it myself.

Will some of it happen? Yes it will. There will be times when we feel it's time to move on from a given reward. It's not going to be an incredibly common thing, but it will happen.
