I have been in contact with an Apple engineering team (they contacted me via a post I made in the Apple discussion forums that is 13 pages long with 8,000 views) regarding a HDD stall issue on the new i5/i7's. This may only apply to people with the Seagate Momentus hard drives.

They have acknowledged that there have been a significant number of these reports, and they are now investigating the issue actively. They are contacting people who report the issue in an effort to get more information about it.

It seems that the resolution (currently, at least), is to have the HDD replaced. It is very possible that a bad series of HDD's went out with the new laptops.

Just wanted to thank you for the post and hope they figure out a way to fix this soon.

And to bump the post.

This is the first time I'm hearing about this to be honest, but then again I rely on this forum to teach me as well so it's great to have people like you posting this information.

This week I've been testing out Starcraft 2 Beta and Cataclysm Beta so I'm all over the place.
