Help Me Lower My Latency! [MAC]
by Xandraiff | 13/05/2009 05:35:45![]() I have recently been getting off the charts numbers for latency, and i cant seem to find the problem. (Im getting approx 400 latency at login and increasing to 750+ in about ~5 mintues) Anyone have any suggestions for me to lower my latency? Im not a great computer guy so anything basic can hopefully work for me to try first thing. Its really bothersome, especially with my raid times and having bad lag as a healer is not good :( Any suggestion here would be awesome, thanks guys. |
by Radoslawn | 13/05/2009 19:15:03![]() Hello Xandraiff, Can you post your trace route to the realm which you are having issues: 1. log into the game 2. put it in window mode Command + M 3. go to Mac HD=>Applications=>Utilities=>Terminal 4. at cursor type netstat -n 5. look for the first Foreign Address that contains .3724 6. type traceroute ( IP address that appears before the .3724 ) > ~/Desktop/tracert.txt and press the Return key. A file will be created on your Desktop called tracert.txt that contains your trace route information 7. quit the Terminal application, open the file created and copy/paste the text to your reply  FTW !!! by Radoslawn | 15/05/2009 21:59:11![]() Hello Defenestrate, The trace is good for the most part except when it hits our server, what Realm are you one ? I've been seeing some latency issues in Ulduar from some older realms, usually due to the high volume of parties going into Ulduar, which we are trying to address, but it's like trying to control a mob from rushing into a store for some pre-Christmas sales. (Time to break the doors down I think, hehe) As Woogie posted, do you use any 3rd party AddOns ? That would explain why the sudden surge when you hit our Realms as the 3rd party AddOns try to gather new data and update them selves.  FTW !!! by Radoslawn | 15/05/2009 22:02:17![]() Hello Woogie, Just wanted to thank you for your post, looks like the battle continues and I do hope you win the war, for yourself and those using that service. I wish you luck. Let me know if you need any info or basic network experience from my part to help you arm yourself when talking to the service provider. I can't say I'm a network guru or anything but I do have some knowledge in that area.  FTW !!! by Radoslawn | 18/05/2009 18:49:11![]() Hello Greenbag, The trace route pretty much explains what's going on, though not surprising since you're connecting from across the ocean. Notice the difference between hop 8 and hop 9, once it hits hop 9 which is: Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, Milton, QLD 4064 Australia, the connection goes up 946% (used a calculator) in terms on slowness. Time to see what your service provider can do, good luck.  FTW !!! by Radoslawn | 18/05/2009 18:54:15![]() Hello Defenestrate, Looks like you have a clean connection, unless this is to the logon server and not the Realm itself, so time to check out your Mac, did you reset PRAM yet ?: Reset PRAM: (Note: in order for this procedure to work the sound must be working normally and not muted) 1. (re)start the computer 2. right after the initial system chime press Opt+command (Apple)+p+r 3. hold these keys down until you get two more chimes 4. let go of the keys and let the system boot up naturally (do not press any keys) ( If sound is not an option: press the keys stated above right after the (re)start, and instead of listening for the 2 chimes, the screen will flash white 2 times.) Also do you have any packet limiting software running in the background, check your Login Items list in the Apple menu => System Preferences => Accounts => your account section. And last, try to power cycle your modem and router please: Power-Cycling Procedure: 1. turn off your modem and router (if using one) - pull the power cords 2. wait 30 seconds 3. turn on your modem - put the power cord back in 4. wait 1 minute 5. turn on the router (if using one) - put the power cord back in 6. wait 1 minute 7. (re)start the computer 8. test World of Warcraft [ Post edited by Radoslawn ]  FTW !!! by Radoslawn | 25/09/2009 00:21:38![]() Hello Shokture, Your trace route is pretty decent, no hops that are breaking up so no * * * indicators, and none of the hops come close to 250 milliseconds which is where the latency indicator in the game becomes red. And this is to the realm you are using right, not the login server. If so, time to look elsewhere, did you delete your Cache, WTF and interface ƒolders yet ? Any security programs on your Mac ?  - if this is not an Apple icon, you are using the wrong operating system Free mount !! 7. copy the foreign address in front of the one that has battlenet on it (ie. 206.17.111.7) 8. select the Traceroute tab 9. paste the address into the box/window 10. click on the Trace button on the right 11. copy the data 12. reply to my/our post and paste that info, please For the most part if you don't have .3724 the you aren't doing a trace route to our games and/or through the terminal application.  - if this is not an Apple icon, you are using the wrong operating system Free mount !! by Radoslawn | 25/09/2009 02:30:38![]() Hello Jagz, Where are you ? Queens University ? After your initial connection it all goes to downhill, your hops take twice as long as the base limit connection of 250 milliseconds. Time to call you service provider or schools IT department. You guys aren't getting some kind of storm up there are you ? by Radoslawn | 25/09/2009 02:33:07![]() Hello Proclaimer, Yous is the cleanest and fastest trace so far in this thread, you should be getting around 45-70ms latency. So it has to be something on your system causing this issue. With the game closed please: 1. go to your Macintosh HD => Applications => World of Warcraft ƒolder and 2. delete the CACHE ƒolder 3. move WTF and INTERFACE ƒolders to the desktop* *gives you the option to be able to move them back and replace the newly formed ones if you want Test the game and let me know what the latency meter is showing.  - if this is not an Apple icon, you are using the wrong operating system Free mount !! by Radoslawn | 06/05/2010 22:00:35![]() Hello Pootytang, Anytime you see times above the 250 millisecond marker you will have high latency and you have a ton of ones above 1000 milliseconds, which is really bad. Also your initial times from your Mac to the router are also very bad, when's the last time you updated the firmware on your router/modem ? The issue starts right after you connect to your service provider's network and hop 3: General IP Information Hostname: unknown.ce-tel.net ISP: CeTEL GmbH Organization: infrastucture Proxy: None detected Type: Corporate Assignment: Static IP Blacklist: Geolocation Information Country: Germany de flag State/Region: Nordrhein-Westfalen City: Ruppichteroth Time to give your service provider a call. But do make sure to get those firmware updates and power cycle your modem/router...
