Gameplay Hardship

Shadowborne

So recently I've had troubles in groups using the LFG system due to another character on my server, who happens to be same race/class/gender, also having a huge similarity in name. Due to this character i've been booted out of groups from the LFG channel, not invited, and simply have people leave groups due to the actions of this individual being mistaken for me.

This however, is not what I'm posting about... what i am posting about is the lack of help from the game masters regarding this issue. My game play and in-game experience are being severely hindered due to this rolling over of bad reputation. I've inquired as to a name change and due to policy they are not allowing me a name change because my name doesn't violate the naming policy.

I don't think that its fair for me to have to deal with this sort of harassment in game when its nothing i have control over. So i'm posting to seek support in this matter.

While I can certainly understand your consternation, Shadowborne, I'm afraid it's not in our practice to make arbitrary exceptions to longstanding policies merely because someone has devised a somewhat plausible justification for a "vanity" name change; the Game Masters to whom you have spoken were correct in informing you that we are regrettably unable to offer the requested service, regardless of the circumstances.

Imagine, for a moment, if we set the precedent of offering "vanity" name changes whenever confusion could possibly arise between multiple characters due to similar names; I believe you'd find that suddenly thousands upon thousands of players -- remember that even the most minute percentage of a player base as vast as World of Warcraft's represents a significant number -- would find themselves affected by this "plight."

Given that one's name is integral to one's in-game identity, our philosophy is only to change names if they are in violation of our policies.

All right, folks, let's try to rein in the off-topic comments. :)

Q u o t e:
Vanity? I fail to see where this is a vanity issue.

It's possible you've misinterpreted my use of the word "vanity," Elanesse, so I apologise if I was unclear previously. Any request that a name be changed that is not in violation of our policies is categorised as such, and is not offered for any reason. Your support is duly noted, however. :)

And we shall deal with any harassment that is reported to us, Shadowborne, if other characters are harassing you please report them via the in-game petitioning system and we shall look into your report and take the appropriate actions.

Really? I don't see any petitions reporting players for possible harassment, Shadowborne, I see no less than eight petitions requesting a name change, six of which were submitted all on the same day.

There is no mention of any individual player that we would be able to look into. I am sorry for the inconvenience that this name that you have had for over a year and a half has caused you, Shadowborne, but we are not able to change any name unless there is a violation.

If you believe that our policies should change in this regard please post on our Suggestion Forums with that request.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking of us, Shadowborne. The player with your similar name chose his name many months before you picked yours. This sort of negates the idea that he chose a name to cause you some form of grief.

While I am sorry that we will be unable to grant you a name change, the fact of the matter is that you chose a perfectly acceptable name that happened to be very similar to another character name on the realm. It does happen.
