First Time Hacked
by Peppersmoke | 09/08/2010 01:52:46![]() Well, it finally happened to me. I've been hacked. Horrible feeling, really. And strange, considering I was just away from the computer for an hour as it happened. Lost all my equipment, bank contents, gold, and even my bags themselves. And I have no idea how it could have happened, as I try to be careful about these sort of things. But, c'est la vie, I guess. I've read all over the site and done everything that was suggested; changed my e-mail address and passwords, ran virus scans, bought an authenticator, filled out a web form with all the info, and submitted an in-game ticket. My question is on the ticket. This is the first time I've ever had to make a ticket for anything, and I'm not sure how the process works. Do I just sit around in-game waiting for a GM to PM me? Because I've been doing that for the last 6 hours, and I need to cook some supper. Also, what is the normal resolution for these situations? Do people get back everything they had previously? *sigh*, like I needed anything else to stress about. |

The most common ways are malware, compromised emails and social engineering - which can actually cover quite a gambit. If you reused the same pass/ID from anywhere else, especially a website - that too is particularly high risk. Remember when you scan - pop open the launcher and have a bit of gibberish in the text fields. Some malware won't wake up unless the launcher is active. As to who - this was foreign and malicious. Trafficking in illicit virtual goods is a multi-BILLION dollar a year business and the vast majority of their 'product' is from pillaged accounts.
