Few questions before buying an Authenticator

ShanĂ

I apologize for bringing up yet another Auth thread, as it seems to be a huge trending topic, but I would just like to ask a few questions before I get one.

Hacking has become extremely aggressive lately on my server (and all over, I imagine), so after two of my guildiles got hacked in a week I decided I really want one. But I'm also seeing that troubleshooting for these guys is a pain and I'm worried for a few reasons.

• My account is old, so my original CD keys are gone (or so I think. I do have one lying around but I'm not sure if it's from my 2nd unused account or not).
• For some bizarre reason, my security answer is wrong. I know the right answer but every time I type it, it says it's wrong. I don't know if I misspelled it or used a retarded nickname or what when i originally signed up. -_-;

SO I guess what I'm hoping to know is:
• Is it possible to find out of the CD keys I do have belong to my current account or my unused one? Is there any way to get a 'digital copy' of them?
• Can I use the CD key for one of my xpacs? (I probably can find my Lich King one)
• Will I be able to reset my security question with or without the CD keys?
• What forms of identification can I use to prove I am who I am?
• Do I need any of these to change my e-mail address? (my account is currently under my main e-mail and I want to change it to a private one for security)
• As a general question, can I use the same Authenticator on two computers, and is it cross platform?

This obviously is going to seem really suspect, but it's just a lot of bad luck on my part. The account is mine and has been for five years. I really want to secure it with an authenticator, and I've been wanting to get one for months now but I'm afraid of getting locked out and having to wait weeks / months if anything should happen.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help. I really appreciate it.

Q u o t e:
Velcroing is a very good idea. Especially for people (like me) who have cats who like to knock loose objects off of a desk to bat them around the apartment (and under couches)...

You should also write down the serial number of the device in a safe location. That way, if it does get lost, you can very easily have it removed with that information alone, and not need to jump through hoops.

Indeed! This is probably the number one easiest step you can take to make your life easier if you happen to lose your Authenticator.

Also, I've found velcro to be a substantial obstacle against my ongoing efforts to deploy small objects into the undefended regions beneath local furniture.

Curse you, velcro! Curse you!

Currently, I'm afraid there's no such system available. If you do not have the serial number available, but you need to remove a legitimately applied Authenticator, it is necessary to verify one's identity.

Q u o t e:
• Will I be able to reset my security question with or without the CD keys?

Currently, under normal circumstances changing the Secret Question/Answer on an account isn't an available service.

Q u o t e:
• What forms of identification can I use to prove I am who I am?

Government issues photo ID is generally the only acceptable form of identification.

Q u o t e:
• Do I need any of these to change my e-mail address? (my account is currently under my main e-mail and I want to change it to a private one for security)

Of those items listed, in most circumstances only the answer to your secret question should be necessary to change the registered email address on your account.

The Authenticators are attached to an account, not a computer. You can use them anywhere you would normally be able to log in. For more information, it would be very wise to thoroughly review our Authenticator FAQs here:

My pleasure! You might want to check out our security site too, since it contains valuable guidance on keeping your Battle.net account secure:

Ah, ok. I can't reset it. But I did print out and am filling out the form posted above and it gives the option to retrieve the answer I had originally, so with that it should be good.

I've got a state ID so I should be able to get this stuff settled. Gonna order the authenticator this week.
Woot.

Thanks again everyone.

Delighted to hear it! Don't forget to check to see if your mobile device is compatible with a Mobile Authenticator, and to check the FAQ to see if it will meet your needs =). Each type of Authenticator has its advantages, but the Mobile Authenticator is free (or very inexpensive), and is available virtually instantly.
