Cannot apply the patch

Stompers

I am unable to apply the patch. I am on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.4. I am able to download the patch through the launcher but when it tries to apply the patch it give this error:

The file "/Applications/Games/Wrath of the Lich King Beta/Background Downloader.app/Contents/MacOS/Blizzard Downloader" could not be opened. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Open)

I've deleted and reinstalled the beta but I still get that error.

Edit: That's nice, they moved this thread to the appropriate forum, apparently not noticing that I already have a thread here and that we are getting no help.

Evening Stompers,

Do me a favor and try the following:

Please use the steps below to repair file permission settings
on the hard drive you have installed World of Warcraft.

1.) click on the Finder icon in the Dock
2.) open the Applications folder
3.) open the Utilities folder
4.) double click on the Disk Utility application icon
5.) select the hard drive the game is installed on
6.) select the First Aid option
7.) click on the Repair Disk Permissions button

- and -

Repair Directory Procedure:

1. (re)start the computer
2. right after the computer starts press Cmd(Apple)+s until you get a black screen with white type
3. let go of the keys when this screen comes up
4. at the cursor please type the following: fsck -f -y and press return
5. please be aware that some of the procedures will look like they are frozen,
but are actually taking a long time i.e checking hierarchy
6. if anything had to be repaired, repeat step 4
7. once things are repaired type exit and press return
8. computer will boot into Mac OS

Now try launching the game and patching again.
Let me know how I'm doing...

Evening Stomper's Boyfriend,

The information was very useful thank you for the work you did. Looks like things are getting crossed or badly linked.

Do me a favor and delete the preference files for the downloader.

Go to Mac HD => Users => your girlfriend's account => Library => Preferences
- delete all files starting with com.blizzard.downloader

Go back into the Mac HD => Users => Shared and make sure the Blizzard folder is back in there, then delete the preference file inside it. (this file tells the downloader where the game is located)

Relaunch the WOW beta.

If it's still not working, post the error that comes up at this point.

Evening Stomper's Boyfriend,

Yeah you're totally right. Besides at this point the only downloader it can be referring to is the one inside the Wrath of the Lich King Beta ƒolder. And since there's no repair.exe tool for the Mac, ( I hate doing this) , it's time to uninstall/ and reinstall.

You could try one, 1 in a 1000 possible solution. Select the Wrath of the Lich King Beta folder and press command + d to duplicate it, then trash the original, and rename the new one from Wrath of the Lich King Beta copy to Wrath of the Lich King Beta, and then test it. Sometimes creating a duplicate forces the file to use a different sector on the hard drive, making it useful. I know, it doesn't make much sense but it has worked for me a number of times, when I was desperate.

Evening Stompers,

So glad you figured it out. Preference files can be notorious, and I've lately seen sometimes issues come up, especially since those files are also used by our regular World of Warcraft/BC game.

Kudos to your troubleshooting skills, and you're boyfriend's of course.

Evenig Kyth,

Sorry to hear that. But you're right about it being a good course of action. Better know that the game is clean, then wonder if you're going to get disconnected at a critical moment when you have a boss at 2% life and are winning, and then disconnect and you come back dead. I have seen grown men and women cry at these times, not pretty.

Evening Lirian,

Two things that will screw things up when it comes to new patches is moving the game folder from where you installed it, so please don't and moving things from the Wrath of Lich King folder itself, just kills the links from letting the patches find the game itself. And changing Mac users as well. If you install while being logged in one Mac user and then log into another one, the permissions get broken and again the patch can't patch. I know it's pretty anal-retentive but the Mac hierarchy also keeps viruses away so I'm thinking it's a good thing.

Let me know if, possibly, any of those two scenarios might have happened, or any other patter you might think of.

Evening Lirian,

Try launching the game itself, and not the Launcher, this last patch is going through the game itself, and not using the Launcher to download. One thing I did was to change the icon of the WotLK Launcher on the dock since it can be a bit odd trying to figure out which is which. If you need instructions of how to do that let me know.

Evening Caedryn,

You wouldn't think that changing the name of an alias would do that, but it looks as if the world has gone nuts and very anal retentive.

Side Note:
What I did was to change the icon itself. I did a screen shot of the DK face, copied it into memory (command + c ), did a "get info" ( command + i ) on the WotLK launcher, selected the icon and pasted over it. Then dragged that launcher into the dock, and got rid of the other one. Very useful especially since both launchers have the same icon.
