Fair day all,

We wanted to throw together some helpful information and FAQ for the upcoming 4.0.0 patches and how the system will be evolving for Cataclysm. In this you’ll find what to expect during patches now, what you should expect as far as performance for bandwidth and of course how long it should take to get the patch installed. Please be aware as always this information is subject to change but we wanted to try and give you an idea of what to expect whenever the patches do go live.

When they do we will be changing the way we deliver patches and this will in turn change what the player base will see on that day. This will also change a bit on how we troubleshoot/address issues. However I’m sure we’ll be telling people to delete addons plenty for the 4.0.0 switch over, heh. At this time it is also possible that standalone patches may be slightly delayed behind the standard patching method. As such it is highly recommended that all players do everything they can to use the standard patching system to obtain these updates as we’re unable to provide an ETA for the standalone release period.

Now as the information below is quite a bit to take in, but in my belief that knowledge is power we’re going to deliver this in two ways. The ever popular TL:DR version and the full detailed information for those techies out there that want to read a bit. ;)

TL:DR – Patch 3.3.x through 4.0.1
With the preparation for Cataclysm well underway and the fires of Deathwing growing hotter, now is the time to prepare for the future of the World of Warcraft. The patch and installation systems are undergoing significant changes and will now download and install at the same time. This will also allow you to play while patching if you meet the bandwidth requirements. There will be two patches to bring everyone up to 4.0.1 from the 3.3.x level. When the patch is released, players with the background downloader will see a few patches including a tools patch to get to 4.0.1 and it will take at least an hour in most situations for the patching to complete. (NOTE: This does not include download time and is purely the conversion process.) From this point forward, post 4.0.0 players will be using the “streaming” installation method and have the option to play while patching. We’re not announcing a date for the patches/installers however they are coming.

Full Detailed Info:
PATCH 4.0.0+ Information

- Background download 4.0.0
Presently, all players should be background downloading the data for 4.0.0 if they can to ease the transition on patch day.
The Size of 4.0.0 Background Download Stages 1-3:
Region Size
NA 4.9 GB
EU 5.3 GB
KR & TW 4.8 GB

- Patch up to 4.0.0 (Migration Patch)
This patch is a special patch which migrates players from the current 3.x layout to a new 4.x layout. This process may take over an hour, IN ADDITION to time spent downloading any data that the player is missing. Players will first see the downloader. The downloader will pull down any data they were missing from the background download, and then will pull down the FINAL STAGE of data (~70-100 MB, depending on your region).

Once all the data has been downloaded, the player will see the updater window. At this point, we are converting to the new 4.0.0 system and this will take some time. During this process, we are converting retail clients from “non-streaming” to “streaming.”

- Apply Tools Patch
Once the 4.0.0 Migration Patch is complete, the new 4.0 Cataclysm Themed launcher will appear – and the first order of business is to update it (as well as the downloader and updater.)

Tools patches are now much more seamless. Instead of kicking the player out and having the downloader and updater flash up on the screen, the update occurs in the launcher itself.
The Size of tools patch: ~19MB (PC), ~26MB (Mac)

- (Streaming) Patch up to 4.0.1
You are now ready to stream WoW! All data after this point will be delivered via the new “Play on Demand” patching system. The progress of the update (which includes any data that needs to be downloaded/updated), is displayed at the bottom. This is pretty self-explanatory, but players may click the “+” next to “New Cataclysm Launcher” for details. Once the “Setup” stage is over, the “Play” button will brighten up and become clickable. Clicking on it will launch the game and allow the player to log in.

- Player Enters WoW
The player should see the familiar Wrath of the Lich King login screen. If the player has entered the game before the patch download and application are complete, the download and update of the game will continue in the background. The time it takes to complete the download depends on how much data they must download/update, and the speed of their internet connection. Those factors may also have an impact on the play experience if the player encounters data that they have not already downloaded or applied.

The player may see blue walls, temporary low-resolution textures, or experience a delay while the required data is retrieved and applied. The player will see a couple of new UI elements in WoW related to streaming. While the player is downloading data, a radial icon will appear. Its color reflects the stage of data being streamed. If the player mouses over the PC icon, they will be able to see how much of the game has been downloaded.

*BANDWIDTH REQUIREMENTS*
• The download of players with more than 1 Mb/s will consist of three stages:
o Setup: Core game content is being prepared. You cannot enter the game at this time.
o Available: Major game content is not completely applied. You can play, however your game experience will not be ideal.
o Playable: Final game content is almost complete. You may experience a few game issues while playing at this stage.
• The downloader of players with less than 1 Mb/s will consist of only two stages:
o Setup: Core game content is being prepared. You cannot enter the game at this time.
o Playable: Final game content is almost complete. You may experience a few game issues while playing at this stage.
• The “Available” stage is missing for players under 1 Mb/s … it has been added to the setup stage. Players with low bandwidth must wait until the green section to play.
• If a player is low bandwidth, a yellow triangle with an exclamation point will appear at the bottom of the Launcher. If the player clicks on this button, the Connection Info screen will pop up. At the top, the player will be notified that they have low bandwidth and so their streaming options have been limited.
• Players with low bandwidth may elect to override this limitation by going to the downloader preferences window (under options at the top of the Launcher) and selecting the “Allow quick play regardless of network speed” option.

The total size of 4.0.1
Around 1.4GB will be delivered for 4.0.1, as such:
• For players who meet the bandwidth requirements:
• ~25 - 60 MB of red data (depending on region)
• ~450 MB of yellow data
• ~850 MB of green data
• For players who do not meet the bandwidth requirements:
• ~505 - 540 MB of red data
• ~850 MB of green data

*New Installs Using the Online Web Installer*
Players who install the game from scratch will experience a relatively short download and installation process. (It should take less than 15-20 minutes, depending upon your connection of course.) Most of the game data delivery will be done from the Launcher. Thus, the player (with good bandwidth) will be able to opt to play with only around 100 MB of game data installed!

FAQ
    Q. Since the new system still uses P2P, do I only seed when I’m also downloading something, or will I uploading data to other players all the time?
    A. As with the prior system, when you have downloaded all data, you will no longer seed.

    Q. Will P2P be used when downloading while in the game?
    A. Eventually, it will. But during this initial release, it will not.

    Q. The background downloader currently allows me to continue downloading after exiting the game. Can you add that feature to this new system?
    A. We intend to add this feature soon. Until then, you can re-open your Launcher after you exit the game if you wish to continue downloading game data.

    Q. How is data assigned to each stage?
    A. Data is assigned to each stage based on the relative need for that data. Red is required to get into the game, Yellow is data needed for base gameplay, and Green is for variants of base game data (higher-resolution graphics, alternate sounds, other flavor data).

    Q. How do I know when the entire game is downloaded?
    A. The progress bar will reach 100%, and then will not be shown on subsequent launches (until there is a new patch released).

    Q. Will I still be able to download patches from mirror sites?
    A. Standalone patches will be made available again soon.

    Q. Will the downloader still use P2P / bittorrent?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Will large patches still be downloadable in advance through the background downloader?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Will it be possible to download the entire game before I begin playing it?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Is this mandatory?
    A. No. Players will have the option of playing before all game data is downloaded and applied. They may choose to enter the game, or they may choose to wait. (Please note: Choosing to enter the game before the Green marker will result in decreased performance. Waiting for it to complete will always be the best option however we wanted to provide the options to get players back into the game as quickly as possible but this will result in lower framerates and sometimes odd graphical textures while things are updated/patched.)

    Q. On patch days, will I be able to start the patch download before the realms are back up?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Will I still be able to download a patch once and copy it to multiple machines?
    A. Yes, as long as you have fully downloaded the entire patch. However, as with the prior expansions, patches from a previous major version (all patches prior to 4.0) will not work with the new major version.

    Q. What if I have a low bandwidth connection?
    A. Players with connections below 1 Mb/sec will be required to download both Setup (Red) and Available (Yellow) data before entering the game.

We hope this information helps our players be more aware and better prepared for the switch and that this system will ultimately yield a better experience for all. As always one of our goals is to get you back in and playing as quickly as possible. So players, now you know… and knowing is half the battle. ;)

Greetings Fellow Patchers,

We wanted to stress one major point about the migration process that is occurring with World of Warcraft with this current patch. If you're getting errors about not having enough file size and are confused by this it's important to remember that everything in the game is being converted/patched on the fly. This means that the game will essentially DOUBLE in size of it's current install usage. So if you only have ~10-15GB free then you may run into these problems. In these situations the only way around this at this time is to completely remove the game and reinstall from the new installer. I'm going to place the instructions to ensure the game is completely removed below, along with re-installation instructions. :)

In order to remove World of Warcraft safely from your system, you will need to go into your Control Panel and use Add/Remove Programs. To do this, first go to the Start/Windows button, click Control Panel, and then double click on Add or Remove Programs.

-For Windows XP, you will have the add/remove programs option.
-For Windows Vista/7, you will have an uninstall/remove option under the "Programs" or "Programs and Features" section.

If the game is not listed in your Add/Remove Programs, or you receive an error during the uninstallation process, then you will have to manually uninstall the game by deleting the application directory where the program was installed. The default location is "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft". On Vista/7, this folder may also have been moved to "C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft".

You will also want to search your hard drive for any Warcraft related files and delete them, including your Temporary folders and the Blizzard Entertainment folder from the common files folder. These folders will normally be located at:

    C:\Windows\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\<YourName>\Local Settings\Temp
(Delete all files in these folders that you are able to. Some files may be used by other programs and not able to be deleted.)

    C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft
(Select and Delete this folder if it exists)

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment
(Select and Delete this folder if it exists)

    C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft
(Select and Delete this folder if it exists)

    C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft\
(Select and Delete this folder if it exists)

Once uninstalled, please also remove the remaining World of Warcraft game folder if this has not been done already. Once all previous files have been removed, re-run the installer from the downloaded install files to reinstall the game.

To download the game software, please log into your World of Warcraft account page at https://us.battle.net/account/management/download/ . Select the appropriate PC or Mac download link and save this file to your system. It's best to save the file to your desktop.

*** Note for Vista and Windows 7 users: Right clicking the downloader file and selecting "Run as administrator" is recommended instead of double clicking to prevent copying, saving or other permission issues with the downloader. ***

After the game is re-installed, please make sure to not reinstall any custom UIs unless they are updated for the most current release of the game.

Hey all,

Here is an update to the topic of Cinematics and our online installer:

We’d like to take a moment to clarify how we’ll be delivering World of Warcraft: Cataclysm cinematics to players who purchase the expansion digitally through Battle.net or download the installer from the web in the future.

Prior to the December 7 launch of Cataclysm, all current World of Warcraft players will receive the Cataclysm intro cinematic as part of an upcoming patch. In addition, all other in-game cinematics (including previous ones such as the Wrathgate movie) will be available for download to players who have not previously installed them. These cinematics will be automatically downloaded in the background while you play the game, after other critical game data has been received.
