Xarantaur's Lore Q&A V (Archive)

Xarantaur

OOC: In the past few months I have grown increasingly tired with running my Lore Q&A. I am finding it harder to find time to answer questions, and am finding I am simply not enjoying it anymore. It is no-one's fault I am simply worn out. So I have decided after thinking about it for several weeks, even months that the time has come to put Xarantaur to bed.
I'd like to thank all who have come through my threads in the past couple of years and Blizzard for continuing to sticky my threads. I'd also like to think that in my time here I have helped people. Anyone who really still has an urgent need to contact me can do so at xarantaur.rampagingpolygons.com, but please be patient for responses.))

IC:
Xarantaur takes one last glance around the tent before adjusting the satchel on his shoulder. Walking out of the flap he glances at the laden kodos, weighed down by many chests and satchets of books and scrolls. Xarantaur talks to the driver at the head of the caravan.

"Make sure these find there way safely to Orgrimmar. My colleague Gartok will meet you.."
"We will old one. May I ask why you do not take them with you?"

The aged, snow furred Tauren smiles warmly at the youngling.

"I will not need them where I am going and Gartok knows how to find me should I have need of them again."

Mounting another Kodo he tugs on the reins, urging the creature onwards as he heads south...

Several days later the Tauren arrives at a peculier cavern strewn with debris from civilizations present and past.
As he approaches a Bronze Dragon descends. At first it fixes him with an unreadable expression, before shifting to what looks very much like a smile.

"Welcome Watcher Xarantaur, it has been a very long time indeed since you last graced us with your presence."

The wizened Tauren grinned, falling in step besides the Dragon as they enter the cavern.

"That is has Anachronos. Was it before or after the War of the Shifting Sands?"
"Just after, you chronicled the battle with the Qiraj."
"Ah yes. It all sort of blurs together when you are as old as I am."

The two chuckle at the absurdity of such a statement, given the present company.

"Is the lord of the cavern in residence?"

The Dragon shakes his great head.

"He is... away. Tell me, why have you returned?"

Xarantaur chuckles quietly at the dragon's abrupt change of subject.

"Even before I met our master I always had a thirst for knowledge, druidism gave me that, but when Cenarius left my kind I became a wanderer in search of knowledge of this world. When I met the timeless one on the edge of death he rewarded my efforts by making me a watcher and granting me immortallity to travel the world.
For a time I was content to simply teach others what I had learnt, but now... now it is time to go travelling again."

Anachronos nods knowlingly. Those with immortallity and the capability to walk the timeways rarely can remain in one era for too long.
Deep below the sands of Tanaris, a lone horned figure stands before a swirling portal. Hefting a very special enchanted hammer on one shoulder he steps through and in the blink of an eye he is gone.

Extract from a letter to the Orc Shaman Gartok

Hello old friend.

As you are reading this you have recieved my books and scrolls. I trust you to keep them safe until the day I should need them again.
I have returned to my journeying ways and have departed for the Caverns of Time, who knows? We may meet again sooner than either one of us expects.
How ironic... despite all my chronicaling I find it hard to write a letter now, so I shall finish this note.
Keep well, keep safe and may the spirits of your ancestors always guide you.

Signed
~ Xarantaur

((So... this is farewell. I doubt I will be around these forums much in the future. I felt that before I went I should answer a few questions about Xarantaur's personal history and how he can know so much. As for the thread, well I've saved all 31 pages of it, I would request it be locked but left as a reference for others.
Farewell
Xaran))

((An Important note

I will not answer questions concerning Burning Crusade in game story or lore and I request nobody asks questions concerning it as I know no more than any of you and would prefer to discover these things for myself rather than having them spoiled for myself and others by people asking about them here.

Thank you.

Xarantaur))

((Chapter V you may ask? What about Chapter I-IV? Well you see I had reached the fifth chapter of my thread on the old forums and rather than belittle that achievement I decided to continue where I left off. I have all the old threads saved but unfourtunately I have no easy way of uploading them for public viewing yet. Now, for the sake of newcomers I place the original introduction again in this thread, and the last question and answer from the old thread follows that.))

Greetings traveller. You come seeking knowledge do you not? You are in the right place then, for I have travelled far and wide and have studied the myriad myths and histories of this world. I have communed with the spirits of nature themselves and spoken with the gods to amass my library and I do enjoy passing on my knowledge to others.
So please, sit down and warm yourself by the fire. What is it you wish to know?

((Ooc: I hope I can enhance the roleplaying experience of my fellow players by providing consistant and accurate information to the masses so I am making this thread to put my extensive studies of Warcraft lore to good use.
Some of you may know me from other sites as Xaran Alamas, I own and have read every Warcraft RPG book available, all the Warcraft novels including the manga and have extensively studied the lore and backstory of all three Warcraft strategy games and their expansion packs and a growing knowledge of newly introduced WoW lore. I also have direct email contact with the Thundergod Chris Metzen himself with whom I discuss lore with frequently.
Feel free to ask me lore questions in character or out, and myself or one of my apprentices (such as Kanitala) will return with an answer as soon as possible. Please be patient however as I may have to research a question to make sure it is 100% accurate and true to the fact but I will try to answer questions at least once per day time permitting. Periodically I will update this post with the most frequently asked questions.
I look forward to your questions :)))

((Last question from the old thread))

Q u o t e:
Another gnomish question ;)
There seem to be lots of gnome mages amongst the Kirin Tor and around Dalaran, and corrupted mages in Scholomance - does that mean the original gnomish archmages came back to Dalaran after they were driven out of there of have they "always been there"?

There have likely been Gnomish mages in Dalaran for a long time, the choice of residing in Dalaran is purely personal preference. Many did so as it had the best resources for learning the magical arts. Those in Dalaran are simply part of the Kirin'Tor, those in Scholomance in service of the Lich King etc.
