Why do people hate Gnomes?

I've questioned a few of my friends who are Gnome haters about this, and they simply reply 'Because they're Gnomes.' As you can imagine, this is not very helpful. So i'm asking you: Why is it so many people hate Gnomes? PS: Can I only have mature responses please? I'm asking this as a serious question.
