What is happening?

Whine thread 2 got locked.

Any blue that care to explain what you are doing?
Take one forum, add a couple hundred horny nerds, a dash of hormones, the confusion of puberty and a sprinkling of bisexual/homosexual/transsexual people and voila! :D

Q u o t e:
the whine thread isn't really discussion, it's more... comfort/spam. Well, they might be right!

QFT

To elaborate; the first whine thread, and some other threads (including on other forums) were ok at first, but it has become too much of a trend/standard, and this is after all discussion forums, not a chat room. When it comes to thread length, most discussions benefit from a fresh start when reaching 500 posts, so it should be an exception to have the post limit extended.

Q u o t e:
Thundy, shouldn't you be home sleeping or holding weekend?

I'm in the US office this week. Plenty of hours left of my day. ;-)

Q u o t e:
Can you please explain why the thread about cracking your fingers and neck got deleted? That's the one I'm the most confused about. I don't see anything that was wrong with it.

I didn't see that one. I'm sure the moderator who did delete it had a good reason. (Edit: saw now that it's not deleted, but locked. While it doesn't really violate any guidelines, I must say I fail at seeing why it's a topic for discussion. If anything, something for a chat room maybe?)

Q u o t e:
I hope I won't get a ban or so for this but the description of the OT forum goes:

"Off-topic posts of interest to the World of Warcraft community. "

If we find the threads interesting, how come you are locking it? If you feel we are spamming, tell people to stop it instead of insta locking it.

Why would there be a risk of a ban for that?

I think the distinction is this one: "of interest to the World of Warcraft community" versus "of intterest to any individual in the World of Warcraft community". The forum has leaned towards the latter, while we lean towards the former.

Q u o t e:
Thundy, can you please, please, please explain what's with all the deletions of discussion threads recently? It's not too much to ask, and I trust that you're reasonable enough to at least throw us bone once in a while.

Please? One last shred of hope?

I can't check all deleted threads, but I'm sure they were not appropriate for some reason. Reposting locked or deleted threads, making threads that function as chat channels instead of discussions, and spam threads are likely to get deleted. Locking may in some cases be a better option though.

Q u o t e:
edit: Or are some people unhappy with it?

Correct. And people unhappy with it hardly dare to speak up about it, as the few times that happens they are quickly flamed to cinders (not talking specifically about the Off Topic forum now, mind you - I've seen some ridicule and bashing of people here too though). Instead, they report it.

Q u o t e:
How is a discussion thread about world issues not of interest to the WoW community when a world issue effects all of us? You can't separate the individual from the community. The individuals make up the community.

1000 individuals = community.

Not sure which thread you refer to now, but if people are interested in e.g. world politics, why not go to a world politics forum to discuss it? I'm sure there would be more of a community for it there, to all participant's interest.

I'm not saying you should get out of the forums for anything not at least somewhat related to WoW, gaming or similar, just a thought since you ask. Politics, sex and religion threads have a tendency to derail or turn nasty though, so we generally don't appreciate those.

Q u o t e:
But that also means that any discussion that doesn't revolve around WoW or its players can get locked using the above clause? Such as "Favorite movies", "This youtube video is so funny" and "Can you women help me out picking a bouqet for my date?".

Does that mean that the general and the off-topic are supposed to be twin forums, rather than opposites?

I said we "lean towards", not "adamantly enforce". ;-) The General forum is entirely about WoW though.

It has just tilted a bit too much to one side lately. I'm sure we'll find a good line for this and other forums, and I think some clarification would be good. We'll see what we can do about that, but it's not something I can or will just write up not on the spot by myself.

The sticky spam thread is still open, btw.

Q u o t e:
That's for taking the time to actually talk about this. Getting the feeling the forums aren't going to be the same in the future.

I'm going to ask one last time, and then leave it; This is the thread I mentioned about cracking bones, and me, nor anybody else who posted about it, could find anything offensive in it. Yet, it was locked without any explaination:

http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=4010221130&sid=1

Can you please tell us why? I mean, people can make mistakes, and maybe this lock was a mistake, that's cool. Perhaps it was a very offensive comment posted, but why not just delete that comment in itself, then? I just want to know, because it's bugging me that there's nothing in the thread that seems lockworthy.

Edit: And now the third followup got locked... I am so confused. Is this a joke or sumth?

A re-posting of a locked thread will get locked. Normally re-posting a locked thread also leads to a suspension for refusing to respect the moderator's authority. If a moderator decides a thread was locked by mistake, the original thread will be opened again.

As mentioned in a previous post, I simply see no relevance to the WoW community (in general) of that topic, so I can see why it got locked and would definitely not dispute it.

Q u o t e:
Whilst i understand your reasonings, i would like to point out that most topics could be deleted here on a daily basis if you carry on taking that approach.

Indeed, but it's weekend soon and I want to not have to worry about a riot while I fly back to Europe. ;-) (joking!)

Q u o t e:
At what point do you differentiate whether a topic on farting is more appropriate than discussing the cracking of body parts.

Unfortunately, much of the differentiating is based on which thread people report when they've had enough of reading those threads. If someone will report the farting thread should it resurface I'll happily close that one too. I'm not gonna spend time digging through Off Topic for threads to lock.
