Vaneras

Seen from a role-players perspective, what is it that makes you enjoy World of Warcraft?

Q u o t e:
Hello there Vaneras.

Well Hello there back to you :-)

Q u o t e:
Why do I get the feeling your boss just asked you that question, and you realised you had no idea what to answer *grins*?

Well this is actually not true even though one might get that picture. I Role-play myself now and then and I know why I like to RP in World of Warcraft. But I would like to know about your reasons for why you like to RP in this game, since I am sure not everybody RPs for the same reason :-)

Q u o t e:
Anyways. Even though the above posters make a lot of insightful remarks about roleplaying and roleplaying in WoW specificly, I think Vaneras was aiming for something else.

I am not aiming for anything in particular, so please post whatever you feel is your answer to my question :-)

Q u o t e:
What is it that makes World of warcraft "the game" enjoyable. Not necessarily the lore or the history. Offcourse, I might be way off here and the above posters got it right but lets pretend that I am right...(for once).

Both you and the above posters are right as there is no correct way to interpret or answer the question :-)

Q u o t e:
So what makes WoW so special. Well a lot of things I guess.
Lets break it down.

Lore and depth:
Though the lore in itself is not that remarkable, it has depth in a way few other MMORPG games have. Mostly because the lore in WoW evolved over a long time and people got to play their way through it. People can relate because they "remember" the history of Azeroth. That makes it easier to place a character in the world (for some atleast.)

Lets move on though.

Enviroment:
I thing I like very much about the enviroment is the way NPC's become famous. A very large portion of the NPC's we meet play a part in quests. So even if the world isnt dynamic as such, you can act as if it were. You can talk about your adventures, doing some work for a certain NPC and other people can join in, casually roleplaying along and improvising. This is offcourse a minor detail but it is avery nice way to break the ice when meeting new people.
Instances. A nice way to make your adventuring privat yet still part of the world.
Population centres that actually remind you of towns and not some oversized employment offices.

Group interaction and communication:
This is my favourit. I know I will get flamed for this, but blizzard actually got the classes right.
Wait, hear me out.
In many MMORPG's a class was nothing more than a slight change of clothes and weapons and possibly some magic or equvilant. Sure, everyone had some tricks up their sleeves but the only times you really needed other players were when the old "more is better" equation kicked in. The classes in WoW are very specialized. So much in fact that we have endless threads about class imbalance. Wich is silly because you cant compare a bird with a fish. They both excell... at what they do.
This leads in turn to people actually needing eachother. And whats more important, they need to talk when adventuring together. In effect, Blizzard is forcing us to be social at gunpoint.
I know this last part have is a big part of what I enjoy with roleplaying. Meeting new people and being social.

To finish up:
WoW also sports a rather simple and intuitive user interface. You can also make mods. This helps alot when trying to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of WoW. No annoying scroll down menus cluttering the screen is a godsend.

Well.. thats my view atleast..

An interesting and well thought through answer indeed :-)

Q u o t e:
PS. This doesn not mean we dont want more.. Like instanced housing, guild halls, proper banks... and so on.

I think we all would like to see those things implemented into the game at some point in time... Who knows what the future will bring ;-)

Vaneras

I must say that it has been really interesting to read this thread and you have provided many very good answers for what it is that makes this game enjoyable as a role-player. I share many of your reasons for Role-playing in this game, but after reading some of your posts I must say that some of you make role-playing in World of Warcraft into an art form... I guess that I am not as immersed in role-play as some of you who have posted in this thread :-)

I enjoy reading your replies very much, so please keep posting :-D

Vaneras

Many of you have answered the question and told us why it is you enjoy role-playing in World of Warcraft. Right from the start of this thread it has been very interesting to read your answers, but I can’t help noticing that many of you ask about, or suggest things that you would like to see in a patch for role-players.

Actually we have been reading your requests, suggestions and ideas for an RP patch for some time now, but I would still like to ask the following question:

If you could choose one thing above everything else to include in an RP patch, what would it be?
