Retribution FAQ

This is a little compilation of some frequently asked questions within the Paladin community. Im making this so it might help others getting a quick answer to their questions instead of making the same threads over and over again. Might be a helping hand for quite a few.

Im a theorycrafter myself, and love to micromanage my class, thus I will try to keep this thread up to date when new issues arise. Special thanks to Cromfel & co for a lot of helpful hints along the way.
Was a little stressed at work, made this during my lunch, so it might contain bugs or typos. Please feel free to correct me on the wrong information, and post relative feedback.

Q: Slow or quick weapon?
A: At least for Seal of Command, a slow weapon is the ultimate choice. SoC got a procrate at 6.8 procs pr minute, thus giving you a bigger chance to proc SoC pr swing with a slow weapon.

Q: What about Haste rating then? Will it give more SoC procs pr minute?
A: Unfortunately no, it will only increase white damage from normal hits.

Q: Is Seal of Command rank 1 is better than rank 6?
A: For mana efficiency yes. This is however most important in PvE encounters. The only difference between rank 1 and 6 is the damage done by the judgement. The Proc is the same (70%) on all ranks, but there is a major difference in mana-cost and damage done pr point of mana. However in PvP you might want to deal as much burst damage as possible, thus using rank6 is more effective.

Q: What is the hit cap for retribution paladins?
A: 9% melee hit is the cap with a 2hander. Precision can supply 3%, so you need 6% (95 hit rating) from gear. Without precision you need 142 hit rating to reach the cap.

Q: Do i need both Melee and Spell crit?
A: Both yes and no, however there is no point in stacking spellcrit for retribution. Check the following list for the different abilities and their use.

Melee Crit Rating: Spell Crit Rating:
Crusader Strike Judgement of Vengeance
Seal of Command Judgement of Righteousness
Judgement of Command Exorsism
Seal of Blood Holy Wrath
Judgement of Blood Eye for an eye
Hammer of Wrath All heals

Note all abilities that benefit from spellcrit also use spell HIT rating. This is also the case for Judgement of Command, so precision talent is highly recommended.

Q: What kind of gear should i aim for to begin with?
A: The easiest answer to this question must be to gather the different Gladiator or Tier 4 items. These sets are usually a good start, especially with the Gladiator Season 1 set available from the honor system after patch 2.3. A good guideline is to aim for approximately 1500 ap and 25% crit unbuffed. This gives you a lot of options on which bracers, rings, trinkets and stuff to equip.

Q: What stats is important then?
A: As mentioned, you should aim for around 1500 ap and 25% crit. Strength is favoured over AP, because it scales with Divine Strength and Blessing of Kings. In order you should try to stack (in order)

1. Hit Rating (Until you reach the cap)
2. Strength
3. Crit Rating
4. Agility if you lack crit / Attack Power if you lack ap
5. Spelldamage

Q: What is the weapon speed normalization for Crusader Strike?
A: 3.3

Q: Can Crusader strike proc Seal of Command?
A: No, Crusader Strike cannot proc any damaging seals.

Q: What weapon should i craft when im a blacksmith?
A: Lionheart is slightly better for PvE, Thunder might be the best allrounder when upgraded, as you can judge out SoC when the stunproc goes off for additional damage in both PvP and during grinding. After all its mostly up to you and what type of weapon you prefer.

Q: Savagery or Mongoose enchant?
A: Depends on your playstyle, but for PvE DPS the Mongoose enchant is slightly better over long fights.

Q: What is the best spec to level with?
A: Again depends on how you prefer to play, but this might be a good guide on how to start:
