Key forum rules (updated June 27th)

Or "how to get along with people on the forums, including the moderators”. ;)

Be nice!
  • Don’t insult others ("others" covers people, classes, groups, guilds, companies, etc)
  • Don’t try to provoke others (see above)
  • Don’t call for nerfs – it’s very provoking for those you want to nerf
  • Respect the turf - whether it's Raid & Dungeons, Role-Playing (realm) forum, or a class forum, keep in mind where you are and be respectful
  • Argue the topic, not the person – discrediting others is very bad form (and provoking - see above)
Don’t spam. Spam is not only repeated posting, but also posting nonsense or annoying posts/threads. Examples of spam are
  • “Bump”, “IBTL”, “first”
  • ASCII art
  • Posting the same thread in multiple forums, including posting a thread to link to another thread
  • Links disguised as something else (Rickrolling, link-clicking games, etc.)
Don’t post in CAPS or use excessive punctuation, e.g. “!!!”, “…….” and “>>>look<<<”.

Be constructive, even when disagreeing and giving criticism. If you claim something is a fact, not just your opinion or impression, prove it.

Use a descriptive subject and refrain from using “Blizzard”, “blue”, a CM name or similar to get attention.

Mind your language - the word filter is a hint, not an excuse.

Post in English, and English only - it's the only language all moderators understand, and if a moderator can't verify that your post is not breaking the rules, it will get deleted.

Also, please note that moderators can identify all your characters. Switching character to post with suggests you’re very aware of the post being less than appreciated, and any warranted sanctions will take that into account.

Q u o t e:
You know it's been a bad day on General when a Blue has to post a "Forum Rules for Dummies".

Oh, nothing specific about today. Just a general reminder that we've unfortunately seen necessary a bit too often lately. If people can think twice before the post instead of when they see the "You have been suspended" message, that'd be cool. ;)

Q u o t e:
Oh, the irony. :P

Hehe, good catch. Edited. ;)

Q u o t e:
You do this in a hope of getting less work to do? O_o

Not less to do in general, but less moderation and thus a chance to focus more on other tasks than pure moderation, like discussions, topic research and feedback (both ways). :)

Q u o t e:
I dont see anything about rickrolling! YaY!

It falls under the "spam" rule. It's also getting a bit old by now. ;)

Q u o t e:
So, this means forums going to get bit more strict, or is this just recap of something that's supposed to be here, but rarely is?

Just a recap of the guidelines. Unfortunately we can't spot everything ourselves, so if you feel we need to look at a post please click the BioHazard symbol next to it.

And concerning...

Q u o t e:
Nope there was not a single mention of new servers.

The guy simple came on the forum and asked if anyone was wanting to re-roll on a different realm, he then went on to say that because no new servers were being planned it may be a good idea if all the people that wanted a new realm re-rolled all on the same existing realm as that would make for some great PvP as there would be hundreds of new re-rollers.

He was basically asking Blizzard that as no new realms were planned it may be a good idea to sticky his topic so people could easy find out which realm everyone was going to roll and when they would do it.

Allow me to quote the post:

Q u o t e:
New PVP server?
When will a new pvpserver pop up?
I think we're a few waiting. hoping to reroll

Updated the description of spam posts, and included one more example: "Links disguised as something else (Rickrolling, link-clicking games, etc.)"

Q u o t e:
I do have a question though, if for instance a thread would come in any of the forums about the lousy work you CM's have done up until this point would it be oke to comment in that thread? Or is that a no-no from now on?

Aka, can we still discuss real issues with the game, and the world around it or only puppy threads from now on?

There are few restrictions on what you can discuss. It's more a matter of how. Concerns about moderation or other forum matters should be taken to the community webform (https://www.wow-europe.com/community/webform/index.html).

Added one more point under the "Be nice!" headline:

Q u o t e:
Respect the turf - whether it's Raid & Dungeons, Role-Playing (realm) forum, or a class forum, keep in mind where you are and be respectful

I.e. expect us to view posts targeting a class, raiders, role-players, etc, in a negative way on their respective forums much harsher.

Q u o t e:
Really ticks me off. Correct me if i am wrong, but as a CM you are paid to do a job. All i ask is YOU as a CM be professional. Save your sarcastic comments and vent your frustration somewhere else, no matter how stupid, annoying or irritatating the posts are. I am sure you have guidelines on how to reply to a post, please use them and do not add your personal touch of comic remarks. These kind of replies gives a very bad view on Blizzard on the whole and starts flame wars on specific CMs.

I think you might be looking a bit too negatively on our posts in the first place, and make an effort out of looking for something to pick at. Of course we should be professional, but we should also have flavour and a varied tone in our posts - "varied" allows for some "attitude" when dealing with trolling, flaming and rants, and not "be nice with sugar on top at all times".

A gentle and limited use of sarcasm and satire (a blue posting "first") is in my opinion ok. I made it fairly obvious in the first post you quote (not the moderation rules) that it was a joke, and it was addressing a thread that was anything but constructive.

The first post you quote from Vaneras is just flavour text, just like I write "nerf threads make baby pandas cry" at times. If you take offense at such I think you're already clicking on the thread with intent to find something wrong with the blue post. His second post is not-so-gentle, but then he's also addressing someone who is trolling against a class with a nerf thread.

I honestly don't see any of the posts you quote as venting of frustration, despite us not adding smileys at the end of each line.

Feedback is always appreciated, and while I don't think these were horrible displays of misconduct from any of us, we'll take it to heart. Please try to keep it to the web form though: https://www.wow-europe.com/community/webform/index.html

Thank you.

Q u o t e:
so in total u mean be fan boys or dont post, i like.............. honest

Depends on your definition of "fan boys". If you define a fan boy as someone who makes only supportive posts, not at all. If you think a fan boy is someone who can converse, discuss and give criticism in a constructive manner without name calling, swearing, accusing and posting unsuitable images, then yes. We greatly appreciate constructive criticism and arguments from both (/all) sides of a topic, but it should be kept civil and respectful of the other users of the forums.

Q u o t e:
To Thundgot, if you want more mature and professional behavior I suggest Blizzard revise the age limit and make it 16+ - 18+ You can't really prevent 12 year olds from being immature or unprofessional at times because of their age. This is not at all a flame or an insult towards you, I always try to respect others and use a professional tone when trying to post, but some may find it harder than others.

From forum posts and e-mails from those receiving a suspensions I can't say I've seen much indication that younger players are over-represented. It's hard to judge without getting everybody's birth date and running a statistics query though.

In general I wouldn't expect the younger members of the community to act as mature as the older ones, but the rules are still the same for everyone.

Q u o t e:
A question, what you see more and more is quote spamming, is that against the rules ?

Only quoting a previous post, not contributing with anything else, is normally the equivalent of a "/signed" reply and is handled as all other spam. However, unless it (and other similar types of spam) completely derails a thread or is otherwise becoming too much of a trend, we wouldn't hand out long suspensions for it.

Q u o t e:
Does this include deleted threads aswell?

Yes. I'll try have the point changed to encompass other moderator actions. Any feedback on forum moderation should be taken to the web form, not to the forums.
