FAQ:

    Q1: VOIP? What’s that?
A1: VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol is also known as Voice Chat. Voice Chat is nothing else then speaking through a microphone and the other end hears it. Just like a telephone conversation only this can be done with more then just two people. In WoW you can use this feature to communicate faster.

Q2: Where can I use Voice Chat?
      A2:
Currently Voice chat only works in:
    • Arenas (team-mates only!)
    • Battlegrounds (team-mates only!)
    • Custom channels
    • Parties
    • Raids
      It does NOT work in:
    • Guild chat
    • Official channels (like trade, general etc)

Q3: My guild uses Teamspeak/Ventrilo; can we still use that or are we forced to use Voice Chat?
A3: No, you will not be forced to use the in-game Voice Chat. You can just keep on using Teamspeak/Ventrilo if you want.

Q4: Will we be forced to use Voice Chat in raids/parties?
A4: No, if you want to use Voice Chat then that’s up to you. However, I do advise it to give it a try. It can always be a fun activity.

Q5: I heard the sound quality of the Voice Chat is bad. Is that true and will Voice Chat quality be improved in the future?
A5: Try first then judge. Blizzard will overtime increase the quality once the feature is stable increase the quality. The Voice Chat quality will constantly be looked at.

Q6: Will Blizzard moderate/monitor voice channels?
A6: No, voice channels will not be moderated or monitored by Blizzard. The moderation part lies in the hand of the group/channel/raid-leader!

Q7: Can I block this feature in WoW?
A7: Yes, you can disable this feature account-wide in the “Parental Controls” page in the “account management”.

Q8: Will all realms have Voice Chat enabled?

Adjusting the settings:

Before you rush in and go talk your head off, take your time to adjust the settings. To do this simple press the Escape-button (Esc) or press the Computer-Icon in the small toolbar. Then click Sound & Voice and then clicking on the Voice-tab (below).

Here’s a couple of screenshots (note the red lines!):

Voice chat will introduce the following settings:
  • Enable Voice Chat: Enable this to hear other people (this will not enable you to speak)
  • Enable Microphone: Enable this to be able to speak
  • Microphone volume: This will increase the input of your microphone (the higher it is, the louder other people will hear you)
  • Voice Chat Mode: ”Push to talk” or “Voice activation”.

    • Push to Talk: This will make sure you will only broadcast (your voice) once pressing a button.

      • Key Binding: Set the key that will allow you to broadcast (your voice).
      • Push to talk sound: This will make a sound to warn you that you are broadcasting (your voice).

    • Voice Action: You will broadcast (your voice) once there’s a certain amount of voice volume.

      • Activation sensitivity: How loud do you need to speak to broadcast your voice. The higher it is, the louder you need to speak to broadcast.

  • Speak Volume: This will increase the output of other people’s voice (the higher it is, the louder you will hear people)
  • Game Audio Fade: This controls the audio once you are talking or receiving a voice chat. The lower the slides are, the more silence the audio will be once talking or receiving a voice chat.

To test out the settings you just made, press the “little red o-button” (aka record button) and say something in the microphone. Once you done that simply press the “play button” and hear if you are satisfied with the results. Keep tweaking your settings until you are satisfied.

Once done with adjusting the settings, click Okay and you are ready to go!
Speaking:

Speaking pretty much works like Ventrilo/Teamspeak. Once you adjusted the settings and enabled it, go to Social (O-button) and press the chat-tab. Or simply press the sound-icon attached to the mini-map.

    Here are some screenshots:

Right, now there’s two ways to start talking in a party/raid/channel:

    Quick way (mini-map):
Right-click the sound-icon on your mini-map and select the channel you want to talk in. There you go; you can now receive voice and talk through that party/raid/channel.

    The other way (social-chat-tab):
If you use the Social-chat-tab way, then right-click on the channel you want to use voice and select Voice Chat.

    Here are some screenshots:

Of course you need to see if you are talking in that channel or somebody is talking to you. Here are a couple of ways:
    Seeing yourself speak:
You see how loud you speak by the little frame popping up on your screen (it can be moved freely and will disappear when you stop talking). It will show you how loud you speak.

Seeing somebody speak in the group:
When in a group you can see somebody speak next beside their portrait.

Seeing somebody speak in the raid:
To see somebody talk in the raid you will have to use the Chat-tab in Social.

Seeing somebody speak in the channel:
To see somebody talk in the raid you will have to use the Chat-tab in Social.
Moderation:

Enabling Voice Chat in the channel:
Before you can enable Voice Chat in a channel you need to be leader/channel owner (the one that’s channel owner, let him right-click you and select Make Owner). Once you done that, go back to the Chat-tab, right-click the channel and select Enable Voice. You should now see a message in the channel that says “Voice enabled in channel” and a sound-icon pops up behind the channel name in the chat-tab.
    Here are some screenshots:
    Coming soon!

    Mute people:
Go back to the Chat-tab, right-click on the person and press Mute. This will only silence the person on your WoW and not for everyone.

Kick people from the Voice Chat:
To kick people from the Voice chat, go back to the Chat-tab, right-click on the person and press Silence.

To kick them from the channel and Voice Chat, simply type /ckick <channel> <name> (for example /ckick voiptest ZOMGtroll).

Moderation rights are required of course.

    Giving moderation:
Again, go back to the Chat-tab, right-click on the person and press Make Owner for full rights or Promote for moderation rights.

Giving moderation rights requires channel owner.

Service with a smile :-)
