Bogus Emails from "Blizzard"

Hi guys,

It has been brought to my attention by another player (/salute to Cawo) that there appears to be a bogus Email being sent out to players, claiming that they are accused of account trading, and that the player needs to send out their account details to avoid a permanent ban. The mail apparently looks something like this:

Q u o t e:
It has come to our attention that you are trying to sell/trade your personal World of Warcraft account.
As you may or may not be aware of, this conflicts with the EULA and Terms of Agreement.
If this proves to be true, your account can and will be disabled. It will be ongoing for further investigation by Blizzard employee's.
Blizzard might consider taking legal actions against your crime, if it seems too be of an extreme nature.

If you wish to not get your account suspended you should immediately verify your account.
This action is taken because we at Blizzard Entertainment takes these sales
quite serious. We need to confirm you are the original owner of the account.
This is easiest done by confirming your personal information along with concealed information about your account.
You can confirm that you are the original owner of the account by replying to this email with:

Use the following template below to verfiy your account and information via email.

* First and Surname
* Address
* Zip code
* Phone number Daytime
* Country
* CD-key, alternative a photograph of your CD-key that is located on your manual for World of Warcraft.
* Account name
* Account password
* Secret Question and Answer

If you ignore this mail your account can and will be closed permanently

Hi Maniorc,

Unfortunately my influence only goes as far as these forums and the Game Master department. I have however passed the information I received to the community team, and I'm sure they will take action to spread the word.

When dealing with certain account administration-related mails, we will actually request a player's secret question and answer. But Jazgrim is correct in the sense that your password will never be requested under any circumstances.

Q u o t e:

Actually the cd/authentication key is located under the 3rd CD in "normal" World of Warcraft box.
In TBC it's in upper right corner, near the CDs.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

No, you are correct Twinkiegnoem.

It has also been brought to my attention that some players are now receiving a similar mail from an Email address labelled "WoWaccountReviewEU@blizzard.com (worldofwarcraftaccountrevieweu@gmail.com)". As you can see, this is a GMAIL address, and also bogus. Apparently this mail also contains a fake link to a "Phishing" site, which asks you for your account details.

Please remember we will never ask you to input all of your account details again onto a website, other than the first time you register your World of Warcraft account.

Spread the word!

Perhaps it is not such a good idea to point them out though - I for one would prefer that they are kept in there. ;)

Hi guys,

I would be really be interested to know where the sender of this mail is getting your Email information from, so I can warn the community further. Can any of you perhaps mention any of the WoW fansites that you are registered with, to see if there is any pattern?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

On a side note, I can confirm that the address our Newsletters are currently sent from has changed. It is now Newsletter@email.blizzard.com.

As there can sometimes be concerns from our players about key-logging e-mails and other misleading correspondence, it is worth noting that our newsletters currently only ever link to the Blizzard, WoW Europe and Starcraft 2 domains.

Another day, another Email... Many thanks to Gurlack for this information:

Q u o t e:
Hi,

In the previous versions I was bothered quite a lot with all kind of whispers about goldsellers. With the release of version 2.1 this has been reduced to about 0 (as for now).

Today I received an email (RL) 'bout goldselling! They just won't stop.

Here the contents of the mail:
-----

Hello,

At the moment our company <SNIP> buying and selling World of Warcraft EURO/USA gold, Lineage 2 adena.

We have a lot of customers who would really pay well but a lack of gold to sell.

Now we offerering you to make some cash during your free time by helping us but collect gold for sale.

How it works : you must have a paypal account, which will be used for buing the gold. We will give you the web pages where you can buy it.

Then when you bought a certain amount of gold, in the game and server and character, specified by us, forward your paypal receipt to us so we can calculate the balance and your prifit to send you.

If this may work for you, we will send you an advanced payment (300-500$) to your paypal account (provide email) so you can buy the gold.

after this we will send you order information, example :

store link: <SNIP>

Game: World of warcraft USA

Amount to buy: 2000 gold

appox price: 300$

Server: Stonemaul, Alliance

Character: MrSmith

Read this info, you may accept it and email us back.

Best regards ( - )

Our e-mail please see at contacts!

If you want the email address of the sender I can post it here or mail it, but for now I don't post that.

Hope you can stop this kind of spam also.

Thanx upfront,
Erwin

Another known fake Email, which was brought to my attention by Jakino (Many thanks!):

Q u o t e:
Greetings,

It has come to our attention that you are trying to sell/trade your personal World of Warcraft account. As you may or may not be aware of, this conflicts with the EULA and Terms of Agreement of Blizzard Entertainment and World of Warcraft. If upon further investigation you are indeed attempting to obtain monetary profit against the terms of the user agreement, your account can and will be disabled. Blizzard has the right to consider legal action if necesarry, based on the severety of the action.

If you hope to avoid account suspention you should verify your personal possession of the account in question. We at Blizzard Entertainment take infractions of the user agreement quite seriously, and we must confirm the original ownership of the account. This is easily done by supplying your personal information about your account. You can confirm that you are the original owner of the account by replying to this email:

Please use the following template below to verfiy your account and information via email.

* First and Surname
* Address
* Zip code
* Phone number Daytime
* Country
* Account e-mail
* CD-key, alternative a photograph of your CD-key that is located on your manual for World of Warcraft.
* Account name
* Account password
* Secret Question and Answer

If you ignore this mail your account can and will be closed permanently due to suspicions of alternative ownership. We ask that during the time of the investigation you give approximately twenty-four hours of inactivity after sending a response email. This should provide enough time for Blizzard to confirm your identity and that the terms of agreement are being followed as is necesarry.

I got this information passed onto me today, many thanks to Yani for the heads-up:

I received e-mail which had picture to it telling that I got free 60-day game card.
"Exclusive Offer! Free World of Warcraft 60-Day Pre-Paid Game Card!" from Blizzard Entertainment <blizzardentertainment@hotmail.fr>
As I think, blizzard mail comes from noreplyeu@blizzard.com right?

Anyway, clicking that picture, it asks you to login your account. I did it and not soon after I realized it might be scam. Hurryed to change password asap, login game to check anything to be missing. Nothing wrong, yet, and I hope it will stay OK.
Just warning beforehand others and not get blind of free game time ^^'

Q u o t e:
Hello Issi/Celi

This E-Mail was just found in my Realm Forum, thought you might want to make a new topic regarding this, as you're bound to have people constantly ask.

Q u o t e:
Hi all,

I would like to warn you for a fishing/scam email. Someone is pretending to be Blizzard.

they send you the following email :

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c64/Keller-Rellek/scam.jpg

this is the whole picture of the email:

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c64/Keller-Rellek/wrathct3.png

at first I was really excited I received a beta-key, but then I started to read what I had to submit, that can't be right. Blizzard would never ask for all details like cd-key, secret password, etc etc.

I checked the sender : acctservices@blizzardentertalnment.com (see that the "l"will be a capital "i")

Ofc everyone is smart enough not to fall for this trick, but hey better be warned twice, than loosing your account.

Now to figure out how to inform Blizzard about this...

I can't type the whole E-Mail out as I'm kinda busy, but could you please make sure this is alerted?

***Notice of Account Investigation***

Greetings,

Offense: Violation of T.O.S paragraph 3 "Establishing an account"

You may establish one (1) user account (the "Account") on the Service for each Authentication Key you receive from Blizzard. To establish an Account, you will be required to provide Blizzard with certain personal information and the Authentication Key provided to you by Blizzard. Your failure to supply accurate information to Blizzard when requested, or to update that information as it changes, shall constitute a material breach of this Agreement.

During the registration process, you will be required to select a username and a password that are unique to the Account (collectively referred to hereunder as "Login Information"). You may not share the Account or the Login Information with anyone other than as expressly set forth herein.

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, you acknowledge and agree that you shall have no ownership or other property interest in the Account, and you further acknowledge and agree that all rights in and to the Account are and shall forever be owned by and inure to the benefit of Blizzard.

If a player is found to have shared account(s) information he/she may:

* Be temporarily suspended from the game
* Have further action taken, up to and including account closure, based on the intent of the account information sharing.

Access to the World of Warcraft account, and any World of Warcraft account associated with the payment information you have provided, may have account suspension or closure occur. The account has been reported as having shared account information and thus is in violation of the World of Warcraft Terms of Use.

Please review the World of Warcraft Terms of Use at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html, which you accepted when you installed World of Warcraft and established the account(s).

As a result, the account(s) must be verified for proof of ownership. As stated in paragraph 3 of the World of Warcraft Terms of Use, to establish an Account, you will be required to provide Blizzard with certain personal information and the Authentication Key provided to you by Blizzard.

The list of said personal information required is as follows:

A new kind of scam was brought to my attention today. Many thanks to Mistaken for this information:

Q u o t e:
First off I hope this is the correct forum to post these kind of things.
Second, if its not then please accept my apology :P

Anyways time to get to the point!
As most ppl know scam mails to steal your acc info have been circulating for a while now.
But just the other day my guild was targeted by a scam. In a for me and my guildies all new way.
Unfortunate for some of our members the scam got them :(
What happend was that a person posing as wanting to join our guild wrote a very short application on our forum.
In the application he excused this by saying that he had allready written a long application to our guild on the official wow-europe forum. And then he supplied a link to that forum post. A link that for the unknowing looked completely legit. Wich of course it wasnt. Instead it lead to a site posing as the wow-europe forum login... Well Im sure you can guess the rest of the story from that on...
He faked the link by exploiting the BB code on our forum.

Ill paste a copy of this scam application so you know what to look out for and dont fall for the same thing.

Hello. Sorry for being very lazy, but I already made application to your topic at offical WoW forums. Please read it, I got IMO good gear (full epic) and got full Kara, Gruul, SSC and TK experience.
Here is my application http://forums.wow-europe.com/board.html?forumId=1089&sid=1

But in reallity the link lead to this place <SNIP>

The BB code he used to fake the link was:

So for all the guild forum admins out there that I hope read this. Make sure to disable this kind of BB code or similar ways to post links on your forums. Or at least on the forum where ppl post their applications!

EDIT: Blanked out the scammers host name.

I would advise you all to bring this to the attention of the administrators of your guild websites, and also to let your guild members know of the existence of this scam.

This is a copy of a mail which was sent to Sinejik, and contains a link to a "phishing" site:

Q u o t e:
Investigation Concluded: 09/01/2008
Type of Violation: Involvement in online trading activities
Consequences for Account: Account suspended for 72 hours, Password Reset and Final Warning issued.

It is with regret that we take this type of action, but it is in the best interests of the World of Warcraft community as a whole, and for the integrity of the game. After your suspension has expired, you will be able to access the World of Warcraft servers again.

To protect the account’s security, we have also reset your password and issued you with a computer generated one, which you will receive in a separate e-mail. You will be able to change this password at your leisure, using the Account Management feature on our web site, located at: http://www.wow-europe.com/en/

Your password will be sent from noreplyeu@blizzard.com. If you do not receive it after one hour, please add this address to your email address list so that it is not rejected by any spam filter you are using, and reply to wowaccountrevieweu@blizzard.com informing us that you have not received the password.

Please do not disclose your new password to anyone, including Blizzard staff, or change it back to one of your previous passwords as this could result in your account becoming compromised.

Please note that should any further violations of our Rules and Policies occur, this will almost certainly lead to the permanent closure of your account.

We strongly suggest you review our current Rules and Policies to avoid further action in the future, they can be found at:
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/policy/

Regards,

Account Administration Team
Blizzard Entertainment Europe

The important thing to note with this mail is that it would typically accompany an account suspension - if you have access to your account at the time of receiving, then it is certainly a fake. :)

Details of another variant of the fake Wrath of the Lich King beta sign-ups brought to you by Villadona (thanks!):

Q u o t e:

subject: Wrath of the lich King - Beta Signup
from: Betawotlk@blizzard.com
date: 2008-feb-22 13:57
sent by: <snip>

Q u o t e:

Greetings!

You have been chosen to become a participant for our upcoming World of Warcraft expansion: Wrath of the Lich King!
The beta will commence in a month from now, and we are accepting applicants for the closed beta until February 31th.

However, if you are the original owner of your World of Warcraft account, you are granted a spot in the beta.
All you need to do is to confirm your account, but hurry!
Time is limited, and we have a selected amount of spots to fill for the beta testing period.

To accept the beta and confirm that you are the original owner of your account, you need to visit www.wow-europe.com/wotlkbeta/id=327924 and fill in your account information. It will take about 2-3 work days before you will receive any response.

Please do not share this website in any way. If you do, your account can and will be suspended.

Sincerely,

Blizzard Entertainment Inc
Account Administration Team

As you see this looks like a mail sent from a blizzard e-mail address, and it want you to rush and fill out the form - granting them total access over your account. It's a scam.

How I detected it was a scam: I copied and pasted the text to the link "www.wow-europe.com/wotlkbeta/id=32792" which is not an actual link so it brought me to an error page. It actually point at "<fake site edited away to avoid accidental clicks>" which is a scamming site.

Hopefully no one has posted this warning before as I recieved the mail 8 hours ago. Just wanted to warn everyone in the community.

Note that the link provided appears to be legitimate (albeit non-existent) if you simply copy&paste it, but clicking the actual link in the email would lead to a phishing web site.

This example was provided by Kirktc - many thanks!

Note how the mail claims to request certain information we might legitimately request in the event of account compromise, such as official IDs (even correctly warning you that Blizzard will never ask for your password!), but the email you are asked to submit this information to is not a @blizzard.com address.

Q u o t e:
World of Warcraft - Account Retrieval Instructions

An investigation of your World of Warcraft account has found strong evidence that the account has been accessed by someone who is not allowed to use it.

1. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN AND HOW CAN I STOP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN?
Account compromises are usually a result of the registered user sharing their account, or playing on a computer that has a virus. Please remember that World of Warcraft accounts cannot be shared with anyone except one minor who you are the parent or guardian of. To help ensure that no viruses are present that may threaten your account, please regularly scan all computer systems that you use to remove all viruses, including Trojan files, spyware and key loggers. You can find links to scanners in our article about computer and internet security tips at http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=msi0504p. Also be sure to change your account

2. HOW DO I GET MY ACCOUNT BACK?
Use this form to regain account access:

Section A.) Account Information
Account Name:

Section B.) Registered Account User’s Updated Contact Information
E-mail Address:
First Name:
Last Name:
Address 1:
Address 2:

Section C.) Registered Account User’s Identification
Registered Account user’s government-issued photo ID type:

- OR -
Registered Account user’s other ID type:

It has come to our attention that you may not be the original owner of your World of Warcraft account. An investigation was launched on 23/02/08 which then proceeded to flag the account in question. At this moment we cannot disclose any further information until we can confim your identity. We need you to reply with the Requested information to wow_blizzardsupport@europe.com.

Requested Information:

*First and Surname

*Address

*Country

*Zip/Postal Code

*Telephone Number

*CD-Key

*Account Name

*Secret Question and Answer

Do not reply to this email address as it was sent through an output-only emailing system. Failure to reply with the requested information within 24hrs will result in the account being Permanent Banned and Deleted.

This is the first step taken to verify your account. Remember, a Blizzard employee will never ask for your password!

Yours Sincerely,

Account Management Team

Blizzard Entertainment Inc

As previously mentioned in this thread, the key thing to note proving this Email is bogus is simple - First a player would know about their account been under investigation for account trading, would be when they are permanently banned - we would not send you a mail in advance of any investigations.

It has come to our attention that certain individuals have been claiming to use a "safe trade" -feature while advertising items such as the Trading Card Game codes in-game. The scammer claims to initiate a "safe trade" feature which does not currently exist in World of Warcraft, and after obtaining the victim's email address in-game an email similar to the following is sent:

Q u o t e:
This is to inform you that the Blizzard SafeTrade system between the characters <character name> and <character name> has been succesfully activated for the item: "<item name>". <character name> will receive an in-game email with the code to activate this item within 15 minutes after trading following amount of money to <character name>: <###> gold.

If you had any trouble with our brand new " Safe Trade System " or could you feel scammed, please, send us a mail regarding your problem to <fake email address>@blizzard.com. Please DO NOT submit tickets regarding safetrade in game.

THIS IS NOT A LEGITIMATE EMAIL. Such a system does not exist. This activity is covered by our scam policies and should be immediately reported to a Game Master in-game. Please exercise extreme caution should you witness someone offering to trade codes for in-game goods.
